The Long Beach Poly girls volleyball team is vying to be one of the top programs in the Press-Telegram area this season after finishing below .500 last year.

The Jackrabbits, who finished 11-18 last season, are 19-6 overall and 9-0 in the Moore League heading into their last three league matches.

Poly is ranked No. 3 in CIF-SS Division 3 and will play at Wilson on Tuesday in the de facto Moore League championship game. The

Jackrabbits, who are led by senior Cynthia Hinojosa and freshman Cedra Talaga, beat the Bruins 3-1 at home on Sept. 14.

Los Alamitos (24-4) is the top-ranked squad in the area, as the No. 5 team in the latest Division 1/ 2 poll.

Wilson (19-7, 8-1) is ranked No. 14 in the Division 1/ 2 poll, which means it will likely be slotted into Division 2 for the playoffs unless it defeats higherranked opponents at this weekend's Redondo Power Classic Tournament.

La Mirada (16-8) and Mayfair (15-7) are ranked

No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, in Division 6. Gahr (18-11) is ranked just outside the Top 10 in Division 6.

Norwalk (19-10) is ranked No. 2 in Division 7. Avalon (16-9-1) is ranked No. 9 in Division 7.

Firebaugh (15-12-1) is ranked No. 5 in Division 8.

Boys and girls cross country

With senior Jason Parra as his team's No. 1 distance runner, the Millikan boys cross country team is No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 rankings.

Parra, who won the Moore League cluster meet last week in 14 minutes, 10 seconds, is arguably one of the best distance runners in the state. However, the Rams are not a one-runner show. They have lots of depth this season behind Parra, who recently committed to Notre Dame, including juniors Maximiliano Ramirez, Jack Brown, Eric Plascencia and sophomore Aiden Ransom. Seniors Emmett Wechsler, Joaquin Ocampo and Michael Brief and junior Lucas Crockett are in the mix to round out Millikan's top seven.

The St. John Bosco boys cross country team is No. 4 in this week's CIF-SS Division 4 rankings. The Braves are led by senior Aiden Aldana, who recently broke a school record with his time of 14:51 at the Trinity League preview meet on Friday.

Senior Andrew Perez is also a runner to watch in the Trinity League and CIF-SS.

On the girls' side, Los Alamitos is No. 9 in the CIF-SS Division 1 rankings. The Griffins are the only local girls cross country team ranked in the Top 10 in Divisions

1-5.

Boys water polo

The Downey boys water polo team is No. 5 in this week's Division 3 poll. The Vikings are 11-5 this season.

Cabrillo (9-2) is No. 6 in Division 5.

La Mirada (10-5) and Cerritos (8-2) are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in Division 6.

Girls tennis

The Cerritos girls tennis team is ranked No. 2 in the CIF-SS Division 3 poll. Mayfair is ranked just outside the Top 10 in Division 4.
