Berhalter puts Reyna on the national team for friendlies

For the first time since the World Cup, Borussia Dortmund's Gio Reyna will be in a U.S. men's national team camp led by coach Gregg Berhalter.

Reyna was a member of the World Cup roster, but his lack of playing time led to an ugly soap opera involving his parents and their accusation and an ensuing domestic violence investigation of an incident involving Berhalter and his current wife from 1992.

Last month, U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker said Berhalter and Reyna had spoken, saying “there's a way forward” in the relationship.

Berhalter officially began his second tenure as national team coach last month. Reyna actually made his return for the CONCACAF Nations League in June under then-interim coach B.J. Callaghan. Since then, he has not played for Dortmund due to injuries, but has been on the bench for the last four games.

The USMNT is scheduled to meet in Nashville for camp and then face Germany on Oct. 14 in Connecticut and Ghana on Oct. 17 in Tennessee.

“In line with our long-term strategic approach towards 2026, we have a great opportunity to play against two world-class opponents and continue to progress our group of players,” Berhalter said in a statement. “We are focused on selecting strong rosters and maintaining continuity as much as possible, and this is another important building block.”
