St. John Bosco on track for No. 1 seed

- By Joh■ W. Davis jdavis@scng.com

St. John Bosco (7-1, 3-0) rose to No. 1 in this week's CalPreps rankings for the CIF Southern Section with its 28-0 win against then-No. 1 Mater Dei on Friday.

Before the de facto Trinity League title game, CalPreps gave Bosco a 13% chance of winning. The Braves now have a 90.8 rating compared to last week's 82.4 rating. Bosco is on track to be the No. 1 seed in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs in November.

The Braves won the Division 1 title in 2022.

At the end of the regular season, the CalPreps rankings will be used by CIF-SS to divide the teams into groups for the playoffs.

Here is a look at the CalPreps rankings for other Press-Telegram area teams and the possible playoff division for those teams.

Poly drops in rankings

Poly (7-1, 4-0) dropped one spot this week to No. 8 in the CalPreps CIF-SS rankings despite a 50-6 win against No. 325 Cabrillo (2-6, 0-4) last week.

Poly, ranked No. 5 a few weeks ago, trails No. 5 Orange Lutheran (5-3) and No. 6 Santa Margarita (53) despite a better overall record. No. 7 Rancho Cucamonga is undefeated at 8-0.

The Jackrabbits will play No. 265 Compton (3-5, 1-3) at Veterans Stadium on Friday and could possibly drop to No. 9 or No. 10 over the next two weeks, partly because of their strength of schedule.

However, the Jackrabbits are expected to be a Division 1 team in the playoffs, as 10 teams made the D1 playoffs in 2022 and eight teams made the D1 playoffs in 2021.

Los Alamitos, Millikan, Warren among top 35

Los Alamitos (6-2, 3-0) moved up three spots to No. 12 after its 6914 win against Corona del Mar last week. The Griffins are likely on a collision course to play No. 23 Edison (5-3, 3-0) for the Sunset League title on Oct. 27. The Griffins made it to the Division 1 semifinals in 2022, and this season they could end up being one of the top seeds in Division 2 for the playoffs.

Possibly one of the top seeds in Division 3, Millikan (6-3, 4-1) dropped one spot to No. 31 in the CalPreps rankings after its 56-7 win against Compton last week. The Rams have a bye this week before finishing Moore League play against Cabrillo on Oct. 27.

Also possibly in Division 3, Warren (6-2, 3-0) rose three spots to No. 35 in the rankings after a 28-21 win against No. 58 Downey (6-2, 2-1) at SoFi Stadium last week. The Vikings,

who are currently projected to be placed in Division 4 or Division 5, dropped four spots from No. 54. Downey won the Division 4 title in 2022.

Possibly in Division 6 or Division 7, Mayfair (6-2, 2-1) dropped four spots to No. 93 despite a 28-14 win against No. 141 Dominguez (53, 0-3) last week. Mayfair made it to the D7 semifinals in 2022.

Possibly in Division 7, Lakewood (3-5, 2-2) dropped four spots to No. 108 but still controls whether it will earn an automatic playoff berth with two league games remaining, against No. 185 Wilson (3-5, 2-3) on Friday and Compton on Oct. 27. Lakewood was the Division 8 runner-up in 2022.

St. Anthony (7-2, 3-0) dropped three spots in the rankings to No. 129 despite a 37-7 win against No. 266 St. Genevieve last week. The Saints, who could go undefeated in the Del Rey League with a victory against No. 215 La Salle (4-4, 1-1) on Friday, are likely to be a Division 8 or Division 9 playoff team.

Possibly in Division 11, Bellflower (6-3, 3-0) jumped up eight spots to No. 196 in the rankings after a 32-14 win against No. 242 Paramount (3-5, 1-1) last week. The Buccaneers can win the Mid-Cities League with a victory against No. 296 Lynwood (4-3, 1-1) on Friday. Bellflower was the D11 runner-up in 2022.

Possibly in Division 12, Cerritos (3-5, 1-0) dropped one spot to No. 241 after a 38-0 win against No. 322 Glenn (5-3, 0-1) last week. The Dons will play No. 303 Artesia (5-3, 1-0) for first place in the 605 League Thursday.
