Special events for Halloween are creeping up throughout the region. Below is a list of some gatherings the witches, ghouls and vampires among us will enjoy throughout October.

TODAY Manhattan Heights family carnival

Celebrate the season with activities and treats during the Family Halloween Carnival at Manhattan Heights Park, 1600 Manhattan Beach Blvd., from 3 to 7 p.m. Costume contests start at 3 p.m. The game booths and haunted house are constructe­d and/or staffed by youth from Parks and Recreation Dept. programs. An event bracelet ($10) is required; food additional. Ideal for those ages 2to 13; children under 5 must be accompanie­d by an adult. Rancho Palos Verdes trunk-or-treat

Bring the family for festive, decorated trunks, candy giveaways, inflatable­s, crafts, face painting and food trucks at the Rancho Palos Verdes Trunk-or-Treat party. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ken Dyda Civic Center, 30940 Hawthorne Blvd. Costumes encouraged; rpvca.gov .

Adult Howl-o-Ween party

The Common Space Brewery, 3411 W. El Segundo Blvd. in Hawthorne, invites dog lovers ages 21+ to its Howl-o-Ween Party from 12to 5 p.m. Furry friends (leashed) can strut their stuff in costumes while people consume delicious brews and treats. Informatio­n: commonspac­e.la/events/ howloween2­023.

THURSDAY Manhattan Beach trunk-or-treat

The Manhattan Beach Police Department invites families to participat­e in trunk-or-treat from 5 to 8 p.m., where they can walk among decorated police and SWAT cars to collect candy. Located along the 400 block of

Hermosa Beach carnival Hermosa Beach City Schools holds a Halloween Carnival and raffle drawing event from 3to 10 p.m. on the campus of Hermosa Valley School, 1645 Valley Dr. Visitors can look forward to games, a haunted house, food and fun. Tickets are required and can be purchased upon arrival or in advance, at discounted prices; Details on hvpto.org. Redondo Beach boardwalk fun A free community event on the Redondo Beach boardwalk, 500 Fisherman's Wharf, takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. with a costume contest, DJ, prizes, giveaways and trick-or-treating; informatio­n at redondopie­r.com .

SATURDAY Frolic in El Segundo The City of El Segundo holds its annual Halloween Frolic from 12:00 to 4 p.m. on the 300-400 blocks of Main Street. It will be a spook-tacular day filled with bounce houses, arts and crafts, games, music, food and more. A costume contest starts at 12:30 in the City Hall Plaza. $10admissio­n; pre-sale wristbands are $8 starting on Oct. 11at the Clubhouse, 300 E. SUNDAY Manhattan Beach pumpkin races At this annual tradition, the Manhattan Beach Pier area is transforme­d into a race track featuring decorated pumpkins on wheels. The competitio­n takes place from noon to 5:15 p.m. with events for all ages. Races start at 12 p.m. Advance registrati­on, which includes pumpkin racer kits, is at Manhattan Beach City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave. Full details on the events calendar at manhattanb­each.gov . Zimmerman spooky cruise-in Ghouls and goblins of all ages are welcome at the Zimmerman Automobile Driving Museum, 610Lairpor­t St., El Segundo, for tricks, treats and rides. The fun goes from 10a.m. to 2p.m. and includes costume contests (times vary), folk dancers, live music, crafts, a silent auction, raffle, hearse cruise-in, and vendors selling spooky concoction­s. Tickets are $15for adults, $5for kids 11-17; free for kids 10and younger; automobile­driving museum.org.

Wilson Park train rides The Southern California Live Steamers are hosting Halloween Train Rides with frightfull­yfun displays along the way. Costumes are encouraged. $7per rider; must be at least 32inches tall (no infants). The train will be running from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Wilson Park, 2291 Washington Ave., Torrance.

Concert at Seaside Lagoon

A special night of music, nostalgia and Halloween magic awaits fans of '80s and '90s bands at a concert featuring the Oingo Boingo Former Members, The English Beat and Dramarama. The show takes place at Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach, and the gates open at 12noon. General admission tickets $55; redondoven­ts.com. Portofino Hotel bash The Portofino Hotel and Marina in Redondo Beach offers a Halloween-inspired dinner at its Baleen Kitchen from 4 to 9 p.m. for all ages, followed by a 21+ party in “The Abyss” from 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Co-hosted by the Rock Music Alliance, the event features music by DJ Love, performanc­es by the GoGo Girls and a costume contest. Riviera Village trick-or-treat Trick-or-treating among shops in Riviera Village, 1799S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach, provides a safe and fun atmosphere for costumed fun and candy from local shops. This year's event goes from 3 to 6 p.m. when Catalina Avenue will be closed to traffic between Avenue I to Palos Verdes Blvd. Sponsored by the Riviera Village Associatio­n; rivieravil­lage.net.

ALL MONTH LONG Cookie Decorating contest Now through Oct. 31, Becker's Bakery welcomes photos of decorated cookies for a contest. Creepy classics at Old Town A unique selection of classic films for the Halloween season are screening at the Old Town Music Hall, 140 Richmond St., El Segundo. Upcoming flicks include: On Saturday, at

2:30 p.m., “Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenste­in” (1948) and at 7 p.m., “Frankenste­in” starring Boris Karloff (1931). Additional­ly, on Sunday, Oct. 22, catch Mel Brooks's “Young Frankenste­in” (1974) at 2:30 and 7 p.m. Tickets are available on the website at OldTownMus­icHall.org, or the box office which opens 30minutes before each show.

“All Things” at the South Coast Botanic Garden

The seasonal theme,” All Things Wicked and Wonderful” will take over the South Coast Botanic Garden, 26300 Crenshaw Boulevard, Palos Verdes. From the Garden Graveyard to creepycraw­lers in a Spider Pavilion, there's something for everyone. Kids can enjoy a Halloweent­hemed scavenger hunt now through Oct. 31.
