Recruits announce commitments as CIF-SS postseason grows near
With the Division I college football early signing period on the horizon for December 20-22, several local high school football recruits have announced commitments before the CIF Southern Section football playoffs begin next week.
Poly senior cornerback Quimari Shemwell recently committed to Arizona.
Shemwell, who transferred to Poly for his senior season from Western High in Anaheim, chose Arizona over offers from Utah, Washington State, San Jose State and Connecticut.
Los Alamitos senior cornerback Isaiah Rubin committed to USC on Friday.
Rubin, who transferred to Los Alamitos for his senior season from Desert Pines High in Las Vegas, chose USC over offers from his other top teams: Colorado, Oregon and Utah.
Millikan senior cornerback Loyall Mouzon received a scholarship offer from Fresno State on Monday.
Mouzon, who transferred to Millikan before his senior season from Eastridge High in Rochester, New York, also has offers from schools like Colorado State, Connecticut, San Diego State and Washington State.
Millikan senior defensive end/ linebacker Gregory McClendon committed to San Jose State last week.
McClendon, who also plays tight end, had DI offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Colorado State, Indiana, Oregon State, San Diego State and Washington.
CalPreps rankings
St. John Bosco (8-1, 4-0) maintained the No. 1 overall ranking in CalPreps' CIF-SS rankings with less than one week before the playoff brackets are released on Sunday. The Braves beat No. 12 JSerra 42-20 on Friday. If Bosco beats No. 5 Orange Lutheran this week, the Braves are almost assured the No. 1 seed in the Division 1 playoffs over rival Mater Dei, which St. John Bosco defeated 28-0 on Oct. 13.
At the end of the regular season, the CalPreps rankings will be used by the CIF-SS to divide the teams into groups for the playoffs.
Poly (8-1, 5-0) remained No. 8 in the rankings after a 50-6 win against No. 267 Compton on Friday. It was the first time Poly did not drop in the weekly rankings since being No. 5 early in the Moore League season. The Jackrabbits are preparing to be a Division 1 team, but there is uncertainty over how many teams will be selected for the D1 bracket.
Poly will play at No. 110 Jordan (7-2, 3-2) on Thursday.
Los Alamitos (7-2, 4-0) dropped one spot to No. 13 after a 63-13 win against No. 84 Huntington Beach last week. The Griffins, who could possibly end up in Division 1 or Division 2 playoffs, will play No. 24 Edison for the Sunset League title on Friday.
Millikan (6-3, 4-1) rose two spots to No. 29 after having a bye last week. The Rams will host No. 321 Cabrillo (2-7, 0-5) on Friday. It is possible that even with a big win against Cabrillo, Millikan could drop a few spots in the CalPreps rankings because of their strength of schedule rating.
The Rams are on track to be slotted into the Division 2 or Division 3 playoffs, depending on how many teams are selected for the Division 1 bracket.
Warren (7-2, 4-0) rose one spot to No. 34 after a 40-6 win against La Mirada on Friday.
The Bears, who would clinch back-to-back outright Gateway League championships with a win against No. 140 Dominguez (63, 1-3) this week, will possibly be slotted into the Division 3 playoffs. They lost in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs in 2021 and 2022.
