Five area teams favored to win first-round playoff games at home

- By Joh■ W. Davis jdavis@scng.com

According to CalPreps, only five of 16 Press-Telegram area high school football teams are projected to win their firstround games on Friday in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Interestingly, all five of those teams are at home or hosting games at neutral sites.

CalPreps' ratings were used to rank all 373 CIFSS teams during the regular season and helped determine where 216 teams were slotted into the playoffs.

Poly (Division 2), Los Alamitos (Division 2), St. Anthony (Division 8), Artesia (Division 14) and Lynwood (Division 14), who are all hosting first-round games, are projected to win.

Millikan (D3), Warren (D3), Downey (D4), Mayfair (D7), Lakewood (D7), Jordan (D7), St. Pius X-St. Matthias (D8), Dominguez (D9), Bellflower (D11) and Cerritos (D12), who are all on the road except for Mayfair and Dominguez, are all projected to lose.

In total, 16 area teams will play first-round playoff games. Second-round/ quarterfinal games are scheduled for Nov. 10.

St. John Bosco and the other Division 1 teams don't have first-round games this week. Bosco's quarterfinal game against San Clemente on No. 10 has not yet been given a projection. As the overall No. 1 seed in the CIFSS

playoffs, the Braves will most likely be picked as the overwhelming favorites in that matchup.
