Fundraiser helps LBCC students who are homeless
More than 75 Long Beach City College faculty, staffers and community supporters attended a fundraiser Oct. 15 to help those who are homeless at LBCC.
Held in the beautiful home of Brian and Anna Russell, guests enjoyed a variety of hors d'oeuvres and beverages, donated by Linc Housing. There was an opportunity prize drawing donated by the committee, a silent auction featuring a tour of the USS Iowa and gift cards.
The proceeds from this event, sponsored by the Associate Group, and other donations are used to provide grocery and gasoline gift cards, toiletries, nonperishable food, hotel nights and other services. Total funds raised from this event and Long Beach Gives exceeded $15,000.
A student, assisted by the group, spoke about her experience with homelessness and expressed her appreciation for the LBCC Foundation Associate Group's support. She related that, through their assistance, she was transformed from someone with substance-use disorder who was living in her car to a student with a 4.0 GPA with permanent housing.
Over the past seven years, more than 1,000 LBCC students have received support that has included permanent housing. The group's founders, LBCC board of trustees members Sunny Zia and Ginny Baxter, shared their appreciation and importance of community support.

Camp Fire's 29th Benefit Auction
“Toes in the Sand” was the summer theme of Camp Fire's 29th annual Benefit Auction on Sept. 29 at El Dorado Park Golf Course's Garden Pavilion.
The 185 guests in attendance dressed for summer fun at the beach. Summer beach barbecue caught the theme, with food provided by Naples Rib Company, and tablescapes of sand, shells and candles as centerpieces.
Proceeds of $52,000 from this event will support teen leadership programs at both the middle school and high school levels, camps and day camps, and Camp Fire groups at elementary, middle and high schools.
Dick Webben was the auctioneer, with masterof-ceremonies assistance
from time to time from board members Kevin Guetig and Scott Montgomery.
Camp Fire teens volunteered at the auction, serving as “personal bankers” helping guests avoid standing in lines, and getting purchases to cars.
A highlight of the evening came when the teenagers introduced themselves, sharing their grades and high schools, which always brings cheers and applause from the crowd as high schools from which they graduated are named.
As the evening continued, guests got a kick for the chance to chat with the teens serving as their personal bankers.

Long Beach Cancer League hosts brunch
Viva Italia!
On Oct. 1, paisano Anthony Gagliardi offered his home, which became a Tuscan Villa for an Italian brunch with (what else?) Italian entertainment. Toni Whitesell won the bid at the Long Beach Cancer League Gala event this year. She and 20 guests enjoyed basking in the sun, reminding everyone of a sunny Mediterranean day.
The brunch package was donated to the Long Beach Cancer League by Anthony Gagliardi, Bobbie Fesler and Tammy Newland-Shishido. The wonderful brunch was provided by Gary Wolf and his volunteers.

The Evelyn Haesloop Award
After a lengthy “love for the links,” Evelyn Haesloop decided at age 102 to retire from playing golf. She had begun to tire after playing 18 holes of golf most weeks for more than 50 years. Over the years, she played primarily at two local golf courses: Skylinks and 18 holes at Recreation Park South, aka “Little Rec.”
On Oct.17, at a luncheon, South Course Women's
Golf Club Vice President Jennifer Stahl presented Evelyn with the Evelyn Haesloop Award, an award to be presented to members for the most rounds played. The plaque will be displayed at the club house.
It was a fitting accolade for Evelyn, who has been a member of Little Rec since 1975. Her record of posted scores in the online GHIN system — Golf Handicap Information Network — goes back to March 2009, when she was 88 years old. Since then, she has posted 1,139 rounds. This averages to 79 per year (over 14.5 years). Evelyn has played the most rounds of any member. She was the winner of the most rounds played award in 2019, the award that will now be named for her.
