Giants QB Jones exits with right knee injury

-

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will undergo an MRI today after injuring his right knee in Sunday's 30-6 loss at the Las Vegas Raiders.

Coach Brian Daboll said an X-ray showed “nothing wrong,” but would wait until the results of additional tests before making any definitive judgments.

Jones went down awkwardly on the first play of the second quarter and untouched while dropping back to pass and then grabbed his knee. He first injured it on the final play of the first quarter, going down untouched before Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby touched him down.

Daboll said Jones said at the time it “felt like it buckled,” but nevertheless thought he could return to open the second quarter.

Jones was taken to the blue injury tent and replaced by Tommy DeVito.

Jones signed a $160 million, four-year extension with New York in the offseason. This is the second time he has been injured this season. He missed the previous three games because of a neck injury. WHO WILL START? ❯❯ Atlanta Falcons coach Arthur Smith said his decision to start Taylor Heinicke at quarterback in place of Desmond Ridder this week was not a permanent one.

After seeing Heinicke come up short in a 31-28 loss to the Vikings, he still has not locked himself into a longtime starter at quarterback.

Smith liked some of what he saw of the veteran, who finished 21 for 38 for 268 yards with one touchdown and one interception, but he was not ready to declare him the full-time starter.

“He did turn the ball over, but I thought he operated on third down pretty well,” Smith said. “We'll huddle up and evaluate. I thought he gave us some chances.”

Trailing 24-21 with 9:06 to play, Heinicke drove the Falcons 79 yards for a touchdown that gave Atlanta the lead back with 2:08 to play. The drive included a critical 13-yard scramble by Heinicke on third-and-9.

Ridder started the first eight games of the season, but was replaced at halftime last week in a 28-23 loss to the Titans. The Falcons then scored 20 points in the second half with Heinicke leading the offense.

DUBIOUS MARK FOR BELICHICK ❯❯ With its 20-17 loss to Washington, New England dropped to 2-7 for the first time since Bill Belichick's first season as coach in 2000. The Patriots are now 0-5 in non-division games, the only team in the NFL without a win outside of their division.

“The results aren't there right now. It stinks. And there's no excuses,” quarterback Mac Jones said.

PINCH-KICKER ❯❯ In Sunday's win over the Buccaneers, running back Dare Ogunbowale nailed a tiebreaking 29-yard field goal to put the Texans on top 33-30 with about nine minutes to go. He handled the kickoff duties in the second half with kicker Kaʻimi Fairbairn out with a quadriceps injury. But Houston went for 2 on each of its three second-half touchdowns, before Ogunbowale made the field goal.

He's the first non-kicker or punter to make a field goal since Wes Welker did it on Oct. 10, 2004 for the Dolphins against New England.

QUITE AN IMPACT ❯❯ Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy sacked Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith on backto-back plays, the second of which resulted in a fumble that gave the Ravens the ball at the Seattle 36 with 33 seconds left in the first half.

Justin Tucker's field goal made it 17-3 in an ultimate 37-3 victory.

Van Noy, a 10-year NFL veteran who started 13 games for the Chargers last season, didn't sign with the Ravens until late September. He already has five sacks in six games for Baltimore.
