MATERIALS

• Scraps peach, brown and burgundy

tonals • Scraps turquoise, rust and gold lamés • 1/ 3 yard heat-tolerant sparkly gold synthetic fabric or gold silk dupioni 1/2 yard turquoise solid silk dupioni 1/2 yard white cotton, cotton/sateen or satin • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Gold metallic thread • Turquoise and green embroidery

floss or thread • 23 small gold beads • Black permanent micro pen • 1/2 yard fusible web • Appliqué pressing sheet • Water- erasable marker or pencil • Paper or clear plastic for tracing • Basic sewing tools and supplies • •

CUTTING

Cut appliqué pieces as per instructio­ns using the full-size appliqué motif as marked for color. From gold synthetic fabric or silk dupioni: • Cut 2 (2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 23 (2") E squares. From turquoise solid silk dupioni: • Cut 2 (2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 23 (2") D squares. • Cut 2 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From white fabric: • Cut 1 (123/4" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 1 (91/2" x 123/4") A rectangle, and 2 each 11/2" x 123/4" B strips and 11/2" x 111/2" C strips.

COMPLETING THE APPLIQUÉ

1. Trace individual shapes from the fullsize motif onto the paper side of the fusible web, adding overlaps as marked on patterns as needed. Trace the wing shapes as one piece. 2. Cut out the shapes leaving a margin around each one. Fuse shapes to the wrong side of fabrics. Cut out shapes on marked lines; remove paper backing. 3. Trace the full-size appliqué motif given onto paper or clear plastic to aid with positionin­g of pieces. 4. Flip the pattern over and place under the appliqué pressing sheet. 5. Build the design in numerical order on the pressing sheet, overlappin­g pieces as necessary. Move pieces as needed until satisfied with the motif; fuse together. 6. Pick up the motif as one piece, center and fuse to A. 7. Sew B strips to opposite long sides and C strips to the top and bottom of the A rectangle. 8. Center and transfer the “Peace on Earth” message below the appliqué motif using a water-erasable marker or pencil. 9. Sandwich the batting between the fused top and the prepared backing piece; baste to hold layers together. 10. Using turquoise embroidery floss or thread, machine-embroider or handstitch the message letters. 11. Using gold metallic thread and a narrow close machine satin stitch, sew around each fused shapes as desired. Stitch wing and dress details referring to pattern for design ideas. 12. Transfer the background star points design to A and stitch on the marked lines using a machine straight stitch with gold metallic thread. 13. Machine-quilt the remainder of the background using white thread to match A. 14. Remove all marked lines before pressing the quilted center.
