Dressed to the Nines
Simple lines, great look.
MATERIALS
• 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip each 9
medium-to- dark purple tonals • 11/ 8 yards dark purple tonal • 21/ 3 yards light purple tonal • Backing to size • Batting to size* • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies *Soft & Bright batting from The Warm Company used to make sample.
CUTTING
From each 21/2" by fabric width strip:
• Cut 9 (21/2") A squares.
From dark purple tonal: • Cut 6 (21/2" by fabric width) F/G strips. • Cut 6 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.
From light purple tonal: • Cut 4 (21/2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 54 (21/2") B squares. • Cut 3 (101/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 18 (21/2" x 101/2") C rectangles and 12 (51/2" x 101/2") D rectangles. • Cut 5 (51/2" by fabric width) E strips.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. To complete one Nines block, select two C rectangles, six B squares and nine same-fabric A squares. 2. Join two B squares with three A squares to make an A-B strip as shown in Figure 1; press. Repeat to make a total of three A-B strips.
3. Join the three A-B strips with the C rectangles to complete the block as shown in Figure 2; press.
4. Repeat steps 1–3 to make a total of nine Nines blocks.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
Refer to the Assembly Diagram when piecing the quilt top.
1. Arrange and join three Nines blocks with four D rectangles to make a row; press. Repeat to make a total of three rows.
2. Join the E strips on the short ends to make a long strip; press. Subcut strip into four 51/2" x 501/2" E strips.
3. Join the rows with the E strips, beginning and ending with an E strip; press.
4. Join the F/G strips on the short ends to make a long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 21/2" x 501/2" F strips and 21/2" x 541/2" G strips.
5. Sew F strips to opposite sides and G strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center to complete the quilt top; press.
6. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 110. 7. Quilt as desired. 8. Bind referring to Quilting Basics on page 110 to finish.
