Tulip Time

Make a flower garden quilt.

MATERIALS

• 3/ 8 yard pink tonal • 3/ 8 yard yellow tonal • 3/ 8 yard each dark pink and salmon tonals • 1/2 yard green tonal • 11/ 8 yards white solid • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies

CUTTING

From pink tonal: • Cut 4 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From yellow tonal: • Cut 1 (43/8" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 4 (33/4" x 43/8") D2 rectangles and 2 (41/4" x 71/4") D1 rectangles. • Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 29 (21/2") G squares. From dark pink & salmon tonals: • Cut 1 (43/8" by fabric width) strip each fabric. Subcut strips into 3 (33/4" x 43/8") D2 rectangles and 2 (41/4" x 71/4") D1 rectangles each fabric. • Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) strips each fabric. Subcut dark pink strips into 27 (21/2")

G squares. Subcut salmon strips into 31 (21/2")

G squares. From green tonal: • Cut 2 (5" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 10 (11/2" x 5") A rectangles and 20 (3"x 5") B rectangles. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip.

Subcut strip into 15 (21/2") G squares.

From white solid: • Cut 2 (3" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 20 (3") C squares. • Cut 2 (21/4" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 10 (21/4" x 77/8")

E rectangles.

• Cut 1 (8½" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 8 (2½" x 8½") F rectangles and 6 (2½" x 4½") H rectangles. • Cut 4 (2½" by fabric width) strips. Trim strips to make 2 each 2½" x 38½"

I strips and 2½" x 32½" J strips.

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

1. With right side up, cut each D1 rectangle from the bottom right corner to the top left corner to make D1 triangles as shown in Figure 1. Set aside one each dark pink and salmon D1 triangle for another project.

2. Fold in half along length and crease each D2 rectangle and mark the center on the top short edge as shown in Figure 2.

3. Using a straightedge, cut from each bottom corner to the marked top center to make 10 D2 triangles referring to Figure 3.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the E rectangles, except fold in half across width and mark the center on the top long edge, to make 10 E triangles as shown in Figure 4.

5. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each C square.

6. Referring to Figure 5, place a C square right sides together on a B rectangle and stitch on the marked line. Trim seam to ¼" and press C to the right side to complete a B-C unit. Repeat to make a total of 10 B-C units.

7. Repeat step 6 to make 10 reversed B-C units referring to Figure 6.

8. To complete one Tulip Time block, select one each matching D1 and D2 triangle, one E triangle, one each B-C and reversed B-C unit and one A rectangle.

9. Join the B-C and reversed B-C units with A to make a leaf/stem unit as shown in Figure 7; press. 10. Sew D2 to E and add D1 to make a tulip unit as shown in Figure 8; press. Trim unit to 3½" x 6½" if necessary.

11. Sew the leaf/stem unit to the tulip unit to complete one Tulip Time block referring to Figure 9; press.

12. Repeat steps 8–11 to complete three each dark pink and salmon and four yellow Tulip Time blocks.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to the Assembly Diagram for positioning of blocks to complete the quilt.

1. Arrange and join five Tulip Time blocks with four F rectangles to make a block row; press. Repeat to make a second block row.

2. Select and join two G squares to make a G unit as shown in Figure 10; press. Repeat to make a total of 51 G units.

3. Arrange and join 17 G units and add an H rectangle to each end to make a G-H row referring to Figure 11; press. Repeat to make a total of three G-H rows.

4. Arrange and join the block rows with the G-H rows to complete the pieced center; press.

5. Sew I strips to the top and bottom and J strips to opposite short ends of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.

6. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 110. 7. Quilt as desired. 8. Bind referring to Quilting Basics on page 110 to finish.
