Still Life Mug Rugs

Add these stylish but easy fusible appliquéd mug rugs to your collection. Make one or maybe two this afternoon.

MATERIALS

• Scraps aqua, lime green and

yellow tonals, and red print • ¼ yard white-with-black dots • 1⁄3 yard black-with-white dots • 2 (9" x 7") rectangles

cotton batting • Thread • ½ yard fusible web • Basic sewing tools and supplies

CUTTING

Prepare appliqué motif pieces for fusible appliqué referring to patterns for color to cut and to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué (page 95) for techniques. From white-with-black dots: • Cut 1 (6" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 (6" x 8")

A rectangles. From black-with-white dots: • Cut 1 (7" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 (7" x 9") backing rectangles and 4 each 1" x 6" B strips and 1" x 9" C strips. 1. Select one set of appliqué motif pieces and one A rectangle. 2. Arrange and fuse the appliqué pieces to the A background rectangle in numerical order referring to pattern for positionin­g and order of stitching. 3. Using a narrow machine blanketsti­tch and thread to match fabric pieces, stitch around each fused shape starting with piece 1. 4. Repeat steps 1–3 to complete a second appliquéd A rectangle. 1. Sew a B strip to opposite short sides and a C strip to the top and bottom of each appliquéd A rectangle; press. 2. Place an appliquéd A rectangle right sides together with a 7" x 9" backing rectangle; pin these layers on top of a batting rectangle. 3. Stitch all around, leaving a 3" opening on one side. Trim corners and batting close to stitching. 4. Turn right side out through the opening; press edges smooth and flat.
