Promise of Spring

MATERIALS

• Approximat­ely 25/ 8 yards assorted bright- color prints

• Approximat­ely 25/ 8 yards assorted

white tonals and prints

• 5/ 8 yard black-and-white stripe

• Backing to size

• Batting to size

• Thread

• Basic sewing tools and supplies

CUTTING

From bright-color prints:

• Cut 200 (4") A squares. From white tonals & prints:

• Cut 200 (4") B squares. From black-and-white stripe:

• Cut 7 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each B square.

2. Referring to Figure 1, place a B square right sides together with an A square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line, open and press the units with seams toward A.

3. Repeat step 2 to make a total of 400 A-B units.

4. Trim each A-B unit to 31/2" square, centering the diagonal seam as shown in Figure 2.

5. To complete one Promise of Spring block, select 16 A-B units. Join four units to make an X row as shown in Figure 3; press. Repeat to make a second X row.

6. Join four units to make a Y row as shown in Figure 4; press. Repeat to make a second Y row.

7. Join the X and Y rows as shown in Figure 5 to complete one Promise of Spring block; press.

8. Repeat steps 5–7 to complete a total of 25 Promise of Spring blocks.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed.

1. Arrange and join five Promise of Spring blocks to make a row; press. Repeat to make a total of five rows.

2. Join the rows to complete the quilt top; press.

3. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94.

4. Quilt as desired.

5. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
