• 1/2 yard purple batik

• 2/ 3 yard green batik

• 3/4 yard yellow batik

• 11/4 yards burgundy batik

• 13/4 yards orange batik

• 2 yards tan batik

• Backing to size

• Batting to size

• Thread

• Basic sewing tools and supplies

CUTTING From purple batik:

• Cut 2 (53/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 24 (23/4" x 53/ 8") E rectangles. Cut as per instructio­ns to make E triangles.

From green batik:

• Cut 10 (11/2" by fabric width) H strips.

From yellow batik:

• Cut 5 (21/2" by fabric width) A strips. • Cut 2 (41/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 10 (41/2") C squares.

From burgundy batik:

• Cut 10 (11/2" by fabric width) J strips. • Cut 7 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.

From orange batik:

• Cut 5 (21/2" by fabric width) B strips. • Cut 2 (41/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 16 (41/2") F squares. • Cut 3 (47/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 24 (47/ 8") D squares. Cut as per instructio­ns to make D triangles. • Cut 10 (11/2" by fabric width) I strips. From tan batik: • Cut 2 (121/2" x 601/2") K strips along the

length of the fabric. • Cut 3 (2" x 601/2") G strips along the length

of the fabric.

COMPLETING THE A- B UNITS

1. Sew an A strip to a B strip with right sides together along length to make an A-B strip set; press. Repeat to make a total of five A-B strip sets. 2. Subcut the A-B strip sets into 80 (2½" x 4½") A-B segments as shown in Figure 1.

3. Join two A-B segments to make an A-B unit as shown in Figure 2; press. Repeat to make a total of 40 A-B units.

COMPLETING THE STAR BLOCKS

1. Layer two E rectangles right sides together and draw a line from the lower left corner to the upper right corner; cut on the line to make two each E and ER pieces as shown in Figure 3. Repeat to make a total of 24 each E and ER triangles.

2. Fold one D square in half and crease and pin to hold.

3. Referring to Figure 4, draw a line from the lower left corner to the upper right corner; cut on the line, remove pins and unfold to make one D triangle. Repeat with all D squares to make 24 D triangles.

4. Sew an E and ER triangle to the angled sides of D to complete one D-E unit as shown in Figure 5. Repeat to make 24 D-E units.

5. To complete one Star block, select one C square and four each A-B and D-E units.

6. Sew a D-E unit to opposite sides of C to make the center row as shown in Figure 6; press.

7. Sew an A-B unit to opposite sides of a D-E unit to make the top row as shown in Figure 7; press. Repeat to make the bottom row. Make 2

8. Sew the top and bottom rows to the center row to complete one Star block referring to Figure 8; press. 9. Repeat steps 5–8 to complete a total of six Star blocks.

COMPLETING THE CHAIN BLOCKS

1. To complete one Chain block, select one C square, four F squares and four A-B units.

2. Sew an F square to opposite sides of the C square to make the center row as shown in Figure 9; press.

3. Sew an F square between two A-B units to make the top row as shown in Figure 10; press. Repeat to make the bottom row.

4. Sew the center row between the top and bottom rows to complete one Chain block as shown in Figure 11; press. 5. Repeat steps 1–4 to complete a total of four Chain blocks.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed.

1. Join three Star blocks with two Chain blocks to make a block row; press. Repeat to make a second block row.

2. Join the H strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut the strip into six 1½" x 60½" H strips. 3. Repeat step two with the I and J strips. 4. Sew an H, I and J strip to opposite sides of a G strip to make a pieced strip; press. Repeat to make a total of three pieced strips.

5. Join the block rows with a pieced strip; press. Add a pieced strip to opposite long sides to complete the center section; press.

6. Sew a K strip to the top and bottom of the center section to complete the quilt top; press.

7. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 8. Quilt as desired. 9. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
