Woven Place Mats
Create the illusion of weaving.
MATERIALS
Materials listed will make 2 place mats.
• 3/ 8 yard aqua batik*
• 3/ 8 yard dark blue batik*
• 2/ 3 yard blue floral batik*
• 2 backing rectangles 23" x 17"
• 2 batting rectangles 23" x 17"*
• Thread*
• Basic sewing tools and supplies *Hoffman of California batiks; Hobbs batting; Aurifil thread used to make sample.
CUTTING From aqua batik:
• Cut 6 (11/2" by fabric width) A strips.
From dark blue batik:
• Cut 6 (11/2" by fabric width) B strips.
From blue floral batik:
• Cut 4 (21/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 4 each 21/2" x 151/2" C and 21/2" x 131/2" D strips.
• Cut 4 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Sew an A strip between two B strips with right sides together along length to make a B-A-B strip set; press. Repeat to make a second strip set.
2. Subcut the two B-A-B strip sets into 16 (3½"-square) Blue Rail blocks referring to Figure 1.
3. Sew a B strip between two A strips with right sides together along length to make an A-B-A strip set; press. Repeat to make a second strip set.
4. Subcut the two A-B-A strip sets into 14 (3½"-square) Aqua Rail blocks referring to Figure 2.
COMPLETING THE PLACE MATS
Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed.
1. Select seven Aqua Rail blocks, eight Blue Rail blocks and two each C and D strips to make one place mat.
2. Join two Aqua Rail blocks with three Blue Rail blocks to make a blue row; press. Repeat to make a second blue row.
3. Join two Blue Rail blocks with three Aqua Rail blocks to make the center row; press.
4. Sew the center row between the blue rows to complete one place mat center.
5. Sew C strips to opposite long sides and D strips to the short ends of the place mat center to complete one place mat top; press.
6. Repeat steps 1–5 to complete a second place mat top.
7. Create a quilt sandwich with one place mat top and one each batting and backing rectangle referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. Repeat with the second place mat top.
8. Quilt as desired.
9. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish. QW
