PROJECT NOTE

This quilt could be made with scraps, fat eighths or fat quarters of a variety of fabrics. Batiks are very good blenders, so batik scraps would work together to give the quilt a feeling of coordinating colors.

CUTTING From light green batik:

• Cut 4 (37/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 34 (37/ 8") F squares. From dark green batik:

• Cut 4 (37/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 34 (37/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 68 B triangles. From purple batik:

• Cut 8 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From medium yellow batik:

• Cut 6 (37/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 52 (37/ 8") D squares. From pale yellow batik:

• Cut 13 (37/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 122 (37/ 8") E squares.

• Cut 7 (31/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 68 (31/2") C squares.

• Cut 3 (43/4" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 17 (43/4") A squares.

• Cut 8 (11/2" by fabric width) I/J strips.

COMPLETING THE PIECED UNITS

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each E square and 18 D squares.

2. Referring to Figure 1, place an E square right sides together with an unmarked D square and stitch 1/4" on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press open to make two D-E units. Repeat to make a total of 68 D-E units.

3. Repeat step 2 to make a total of 68 E-F units referring to Figure 2.

4. Repeat step 2 using E squares and three H squares from each H square set to make 108 E-H units, again referring to Figure 2.

5. Repeat step 2 with the marked D squares and the remaining H squares to make 36 D-H units, again referring to Figure 2.

COMPLETING THE BACKGROUND BLOCKS

1. To complete one Background block, select one A square, and four each D-E units, E-F units, B triangles and C squares. 2. Sew B to each side of A to complete the center unit as shown in Figure 3; press.

3. Sew an E-F unit to C to make a side unit as shown in Figure 4; press. Repeat to make a total of four side units.

4. Sew a side unit to opposite sides of the center unit to make the center row as shown in Figure 5; press.

5. Sew a D-E unit to each end of each remaining side unit to complete the top and bottom rows referring to Figure 6; press.

6. Sew the top and bottom rows to the center row to complete one Background block as shown in Figure 7; press. 7. Repeat steps 1–6 to complete a total of 17 Background blocks.

COMPLETING THE FLOWER BLOCKS

1. To complete one Flower block, select a set of 16 G rectangles and two D-H units and six E-H units to match G.

2. Join four G rectangles along the 3½" edges to make a G unit as shown in Figure 8; press. Repeat to make a total of four G units.

3. Sew an E-H unit to a D-H unit; press. Repeat. Join the two units to complete the center unit as shown in Figure 9; press.

4. Sew a G unit to opposite sides of the center unit to complete the center row as shown in Figure 10; press.

5. Sew an E-H unit to each end of each remaining G unit to make the top and bottom rows as shown in Figure 11; press.

6. Sew the top and bottom rows to the center row to complete one Flower block as shown in Figure 12; press.

7. Repeat steps 1–6 to make a total of 18 Flower blocks.
