CUTTING

Prepare flower, flower center, eight leaves and basket appliqué pieces as per patterns and referring to Raw-Edge Fusible Appliqué on page 64. Prepare templates for yo-yo circles and leaf. From print scraps: • Cut a total of 49 (21/2") A squares. From dark pink tonal: • Cut 2 (11/4" x 20") strips. Trim strips to make 2 (11/4" x 141/2")

C strips. From light green print: • Cut 4 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From white print: • Cut 1 (141/2" by fabric width) strip.

Subcut strip into 2 (141/2") B squares.

COMPLETING THE CENTER BLOCK

1. Select and join seven A squares to make a row referring to the Center block drawing; press. Repeat to make a total of seven rows. 2. Referring again to the Center block drawing, join the rows, alternating the seam pressing from row to row, to complete the Center block; press.

COMPLETING THE FLOWER BASKET BLOCKS

1. Prepare six small and 22 large yo-yos referring to the patterns and to Making Yo-Yos on page 75 or Here’s a Tip. 2. To make dimensional leaves, trace the leaf shape onto the wrong side of six assorted green scraps. Fold each scrap in half, right sides together, with traced shape on top and pin to a scrap of batting as shown in Figure 1.

3. Sew all around each traced leaf shape. Cut out 1⁄8" from the stitching line and trim batting close to stitching as shown in Figure 2.

4. Cut a slash in the center of each leaf through one layer only of fabric as shown in Figure 3. Apply no-fray solution to the cut edges of the slash and let dry.

5. Turn each leaf right side out through the slash; press edges flat. Whipstitch the cut edges of the slash closed to complete 6 leaves as shown in Figure 4.

6. Fold and crease each B square to mark the vertical, horizontal and diagonal centers as shown in Figure 5.

7. Center and pin a basket piece ¾" up from the bottom edge of each creased B square as shown in Figure 6.

8. Cut the rickrack into two 16" lengths. Apply no-fray solution to the cut ends and let dry.

9. Slip the ends of one rickrack length under the top edge of the basket at each side and pin. Let the center curve with the loop of the rickrack about 1¼" from the top center of B as shown in Figure 7.

10. Machine-stitch close to both sides of the rickrack using matching thread. 11. Fuse the basket shapes in place. 12. Arrange and fuse four leaves and flowers with centers in each basket area referring to the project photo for positioning suggestions. Note: The dimensional leaves and yo-yos are added after quilting. 13. Machine blanket-stitch around each fused shape to secure to complete two Flower Basket blocks.

COMPLETING THE RUNNER

Refer to the Placement Diagram as needed.

1. Sew a C strip to opposite sides of the Center block and add a Flower Basket block to each end to complete the runner top; press.

2. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 3. Quilt as desired. 4. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.

5. Arrange and pin three dimensional leaves on each Flower Basket block. Stitch through the center of each leaf to secure to the background.

6. Arrange and pin three small and four large yo-yos on each Flower Basket block. Hand-stitch in place about 1⁄8" from the edge of each yo-yo referring to Figure 8.

7. Arrange the remaining large yo-yos in two rows of seven each. Pick up the first two yo-yos in one row and place with the

hole sides together. Take several small overcast stitches on one side to join them as shown in Figure 9.

8. Continue sewing the yo-yos together to make two rows of seven yo-yos each.

9. Place a yo-yo row hole-side down on one short end of the quilted-and-bound runner and stitch to the binding as in step 7 and referring to Figure 10. Repeat with the second yo-yo row on the opposite short end to complete the runner. QW
