PROJECT NOTE

Tri-Recs Tools were used to cut the F and G/GR pieces. If you don’t have these tools, prepare templates using patterns given on page 53 and cut from strips as per instructions.

CUTTING

From the assorted gray/black 51/4" C squares: • Cut each square in half on both diagonals to make 444 C triangles. From cream solid: • Cut 2 (41/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut 1 strip into 3 (41/2") D squares. Use the remainder of the strip and the second strip to cut 12 each G and GR pieces as per instructions. From gray swirls: • Cut 3 (33/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 29 (33/ 8") A1 squares. • Cut 8 (11/2" by fabric width) H/I strips. • Cut 9 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.

CUTTING THE TRIANGLES

1. Using the Tri-Recs Tool or F template and F scraps, cut 12 F pieces. 2. Cut 12 each G and GR pieces from the 41/2" cream solid strips using the Tri-Recs Tool or G/GR template.

COMPLETING THE STAR BLOCKS

1. To make one Star block, select one D square, four F triangles, 4 each G and GR triangles and 16 E squares. 2. Sew G and GR to F to make a side unit as shown in Figure 1; press. Repeat to make a total of four side units. 3. Referring to Figure 2, join two E squares to make a row; press. Repeat. Join the rows to make a corner unit; press. Repeat to make a total of four corner units.

4. To complete one Star block, sew the D square between two side units to make the center row as shown in Figure 3; press.

5. Sew a side unit between two corner units to make the top row as shown in Figure 4; press. Repeat to make the bottom row.

6. Sew the center row between the top and bottom rows to complete one Star block referring to the block drawing; press.

7. Repeat steps 1–6 to make a total of three Star blocks.

COMPLETING THE CHAIN BLOCKS & SETTING TRIANGLES

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of half of the B squares.

2. Referring to Figure 5, place a marked B square right sides together with an unmarked B square and stitch 1/4" on both sides of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line, open and press seam to one side to make two B units. 3. Repeat step 2 to make a total of 368 B units. 4. To complete one Chain block, select one each A and A1 square, 10 B units and 12 C triangles.

5. Arrange and join the A square with three B units and two C triangles to make a long A row as shown in Figure 6; press. Repeat with the A1 square to make a long A1 row.

6. Join two B units with two C triangles to make a short row as shown in Figure 7; press. Repeat to make a second short row.

7. Join two C triangles to make a corner unit as shown in Figure 8; press. Repeat to make a second corner unit.

8. Join the long A row and one short row with a corner unit to make a large triangle unit as shown in Figure 9; press. Repeat to make a second large triangle unit using the long A1 row. 9. Join the large triangle units to complete one Chain block referring to the block drawing; press. 10. Repeat steps 4–9 to make a total of 29 Chain blocks. 11. To complete one setting triangle, select one A square, five B units and six C triangles.

12. Repeat steps 5–7 to complete one each long A row, short row and corner unit. Join the rows and corner unit to complete one setting triangle as shown in Figure 10; press. 13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 to make a total of 14 setting triangles.

COMPLETING THE CORNER TRIANGLES

1. To make one corner triangle, select one A square, two B units and three C triangles.

2. Join the pieces and units in three rows as shown in Figure 11; press. Join the rows to complete one corner triangle, press. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to complete a total of four corner triangles.

COMPLETING THE QUILT

Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed.

1. Arrange and join the Star and Chain blocks with the setting triangles and corner triangles to make diagonal rows; press.

2. Join the rows to complete the pieced center; press.

3. Join H/I strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two each 11/2" x 851/2" H strips and 11/2" x 701/2" I strips.

4. Sew H strips to opposite long sides and I strips to the top and bottom of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.
