Spring Fest

MATERIALS

• 1/2 yard each 11 different blue batiks* • 2/ 3 yard dark blue batik* • 11/4 yards yellow batik* • 37/ 8 yards white batik • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Strip Tube Junior ruler (optional)* • Basic sewing tools and supplies *Poppy, Blue Hawaiian and Hyacinth Bali batiks from Hoffman California Fabrics; Strip Tube Junior ruler from Cozy Quilt used to make sample.

PROJECT NOTE

Usable fabric width must be 41" for cutting instructio­ns given. CUTTING From the 11 different blue batiks: • Cut a total of 18 (33/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 35 sets of 6 matching 33/ 8" B squares. • Cut a total of 26 (57/ 8") G squares. From dark blue batik: • Cut 8 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From yellow batik: • Cut 6 (33/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 70 (33/ 8") C squares. • Cut 8 (11/2" by fabric width) D/E/I strips.

Subcut 1 strip into 4 (11/2" x 51/2") I strips. From white batik: • Cut 25 (33/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 280 (33/ 8") A squares. • Cut 5 (57/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 26 (57/ 8") F squares. • Cut 4 (3" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 52 (3") H squares.

COMPLETING THE SPRING FEST BLOCKS

1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each A square. 2. Referring to Figure 1, place an A square right sides together with a B square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line, open the units and press seams toward B to complete two A-B units. Repeat to make a total of 420 A-B units (35 sets of 12 matching A-B units). 3. Repeat step 2 with A and C squares to make 140 A-C units as shown in Figure 2.

4. To complete one Spring Fest block, select 12 matching A-B units and four A-C units.

5. Arrange and join four A-B units to make the top row as shown in Figure 3; press. Repeat to make the bottom row.

6. Arrange and join two A-C units and add an A-B unit to each end to complete a center unit; press. Repeat to complete a second center unit. Join the two center units to make the center row as shown in Figure 4; press.

7. Sew the top and bottom rows to the center row to complete one Spring Fest block as shown in Figure 5; press. 8. Repeat steps 4–7 to complete a total of 35 Spring Fest blocks.

COMPLETING THE BORDER BLOCKS

1. Draw a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each H and F square.

2. Place an F square right sides together with a G square and stitch ¼" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press open to make two F-G units as shown in Figure 6. Repeat to make a total of 52 F-G units.

3. Referring to Figure 7, place a marked H square right sides together on the G corner of an F-G unit and stitch on the marked line. Trim excess 1/4" beyond the stitching line and press H to the right side to complete a Border block. 4. Repeat step 3 to make a total of 52 Border blocks.
