Tulip Place Mats
Bring a touch of spring to your kitchen with a bunch of bright tulips.
MATERIALS
Materials given make 2 place mats. • Scraps gold and dark purple
tonals • 1 fat eighth each yellow and
bright purple tonals • 1/4 yard dark blue solid • 1/4 yard green tonal • 2/3 yard light blue tonal • 3/4 yard tan tonal • 2 (201/2" x 141/2") batting rectangles • Thread • Paper • Basic sewing tools and supplies
CUTTING
Prepare the A and B patterns for paper piecing referring to Paper Piecing on page 10. From gold tonal scrap: • Cut 2 (2") A2 squares. From dark purple tonal scrap: • Cut 4 (2") A2 squares. From yellow tonal: • Cut 1 (3" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 2 each 3" x 33/4"
A4 and 3" x 53/4" A5 rectangles. From bright purple tonal: • Cut 2 (3" x 20") strips. Subcut strips into 4 each 3" x 33/4"
A4 and 3" x 53/4" A5 rectangles. From dark blue solid: • Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) D strips. From green tonal: • Cut 1 (51/4" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 12 (2" x 51/4") B4/B5 leaf rectangles and 6 (1" x 41/2") B2 stems. From light blue tonal: • Cut 2 (21/2" by fabric width) C strips. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 12 (21/2") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 24 triangles for A1, A3, A6 and A7. • Cut 1 (31/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 12 (21/2" x 31/2")
B5/B7 rectangles.
• Cut 2 (41/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 4 (41/2" x 81/2") E rectangles and 12 (23/4" x 41/2") B1/B3 rectangles.
From tan tonal:
• Cut 1 (201/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 (141/2" x 201/2") backing rectangles and 4 (11/2" x 201/2") F strips.
COMPLETING THE FOURPATCH BLOCKS
1. Sew a C strip to a D strip with right sides together along length to make a C-D strip set; press. Repeat to make a second strip set.
2. Subcut strip sets into 20 (21/2" x 41/2") C-D units as shown in Figure 1.
3. Join two C-D units to complete one Four-Patch block as shown in Figure 2; press.
4. Repeat to complete a total of 10 Four-Patch blocks.
COMPLETING THE TULIP BLOCKS
1. Prepare two yellow and four purple A units and six B units using the paper-piecing patterns given and referring to Paper Piecing on page 10.
2. Sew a purple A unit to a B unit to make a purple Tulip block referring to the block drawing; press. Repeat to make a total of four purple blocks. Do not remove paper patterns.
3. Repeat step 2 using yellow A units to make two yellow Tulip blocks.
COMPLETING THE PLACE MATS
Refer to the Assembly Diagram throughout as needed.
1. To complete one place mat, select five Four-Patch blocks, two purple and one yellow Tulip blocks, two E rectangles and two F strips.
2. Join the five Four-Patch blocks to make a pieced strip; press.
3. Join the three Tulip blocks with the two E rectangles to make a flower strip; press.
4. Join the pieced strip and the flower strip; press. Sew an F strip to opposite long sides to complete one place mat top; press.
5. Place a batting rectangle on a flat surface with a backing rectangle right side up on top. Place a place mat top right sides together with the backing rectangle; pin layers together to hold.
6. Stitch all around, leaving a 4" opening on one side. Remove paper patterns from the Tulip blocks.
7. Trim batting close to seam; clip corners. Turn right side out through the opening.
8. Turn opening edges to the inside; hand-stitch opening closed. Press edges flat.
9. Quilt as desired to finish one place mat.
10. Repeat steps 1–9 to complete a second place mat.
