Welcome spring to your home with a traditional pieced table runner for your dining table.
MATERIALS
• 1/4 yard green/cream check • 5/8 yard rose print • 2/3 yard dark rose tonal • 1 yard cream tonal • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies
CUTTING
From green/cream check: • Cut 1 (13/4" by fabric width) E strip. • Cut 1 (3" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut strip into 4 (3") K squares. From rose print: • Cut 1 (51/2" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut strip into 4 (51/2") A squares. • Cut 4 (3" by fabric width) strips. Subcut 1 strip into 2 (3" x 143/4") J strips. Set aside remaining strips for I, including remainder of strips left over from J. From dark rose tonal: • Cut 2 (33/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 16 (33/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 32 C triangles. • Cut 5 (21/4" by fabric width)
binding strips.
From cream tonal:
• Cut 1 (61/4" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 4 (61/4") squares. Cut each square on both diagonals to make 16 B triangles. • Cut 1 (13/4" by fabric width) D strip. • Cut 1 (151/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 (151/2") H squares and 8 (3") F squares. Cut each H square on both diagonals to make 8 H triangles. Discard 2 triangles. • Cut 1 (8" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 (8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 4 G triangles.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Sew a D strip to an E strip with right sides together along length to make a D-E strip set; press.
2. Subcut the D-E strip set into 16 (13/4" x 3") D-E segments referring to Figure 1.
3. Join two D-E segments to make a D-E unit as shown in Figure 2; press. Repeat to make a total of eight D-E units.
4. Sew a C triangle to each short side of B to make a B-C unit as shown in Figure 3; press. Repeat to make a total of 16 B-C units.
5. To complete one Star block, select one A square, four B-C units, two D-E units and two F squares.
6. Sew a B-C unit to opposite sides of A to complete the center row as shown in Figure 4; press.
7. Sew a D-E unit to the left end and an F square to the right end of each remaining B-C unit to make the top and bottom rows as shown in Figure 5. Make 2 8. Join the rows as shown in Figure 6 to complete one Star block; press. 9. Repeat steps 5–8 to complete a total of four Star blocks.
COMPLETING THE RUNNER
Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed for positioning of blocks and setting pieces.
1. Sew an H triangle to opposite sides of a Star block to make a diagonal row; press. Repeat to make a second diagonal row.
2. Sew one H triangle and two G triangles to one Star block to make the left-end row; press. Repeat to make the right-end row.
3. Join the rows to complete the runner center; press.
4. Join the I strips on the short ends to make one long strip; press. Subcut strip into two 3" x 571/2" I strips.
5. Sew I strips to opposite long sides of the runner center; press.
6. Sew a K square to each end of each J strip; press. Sew these strips to opposite short ends of the runner center to complete the runner top.
7. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 110. 8. Quilt as desired. 9. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 110 to finish. QW
