CUTTING

From black-with-white dots: • Cut 1 (61/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 1 (61/2") backing

square and 9 (21/2") A squares. From white-with-black dots: • Cut 1 (61/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 1 (61/2") backing

square and 9 (21/2") B squares.

1. Prepare template for the flower petal piece using pattern given.

2. Trace the petal shape seven times on the wrong side of the pink dots fabric, leaving 1/4" between the shapes as shown in Figure 9.

3. Fold fabric in half with right sides together and traced shapes on top. Pin to a scrap of batting.

4. Stitch around sides and top of each petal, leaving the bottom straight edge open; cut out 1/8" from seam as shown in Figure 10.

5. Trim batting close to seams and clip curves.

6. Turn right side out; press edges flat. Topstitch around the edge of each petal and up the petal centers as shown in Figure 11.

7. Prepare needle with doubled matching thread and a knot at the end. Take a stitch into the base of one petal, then two or three stitches across the petal end and pull to gather as shown in Figure 12.

8. Add a second petal to the same thread and repeat step 7. Continue in this manner until all petals are gathered on the thread and take a stitch in the first petal to complete a circle as shown in Figure 13.

9. Pull the thread to gather tightly and knot the thread but do not cut. Push the needle up through the center hole and through the black shank button as shown in Figure 14.

10. Take the needle back through the hole in the flower and take a stitch into the top of the remaining pincushion base. Repeat, pull tightly, knot the thread and cut off to finish. QW Springtime Pincushions Flower Petal Cut as per instructions
