CUTTING

COMPLETING THE BIBS

1. Join seven A strips along the 12" edges to make an A panel as shown in Figure 1; press seams to one side. Repeat to make a second panel. 2. Prepare a template for the bib using the pattern given. 3. Trace the bib shape onto the wrong side of each A panel as shown in Figure 2.

4. Place one batting piece on a flat surface; place one bib backing piece right side up on top of batting. Place one traced bib front piece right side down on the layered backing and batting, and pin to hold. 5. Sew all around on traced line, leaving a 3" opening on one side; Trim bib shape, leaving 1/4" all around. 6. Turn right side out through the 3" opening; press edges flat. Turn opening edges to the inside; handstitch closed. 7. Using decorative machine stitches, machine-quilt along the A strip seams. 8. Add a buttonhole to fit button at the top left edge as marked on pattern. 9. Match button position on the right edge and stitch button in place to finish one bib. 10. Repeat steps 5–10 to complete a second bib.

ADDING THE APPLIQUÉ

1. Trace each appliqué shape onto the right side of the appropriate fabrics using a water-erasable marker or pencil. 2. Cut out shapes leaving a 1/8"–1/4" seam allowance all around each piece. 3. Select pieces for one motif. Center piece 1 on one bib 11/2"–2" from the bottom edge; pin to hold in place. 4. Using thread to match piece 1 and turning under the edge along the marked line as you sew, handstitch the piece in place with invisible stitches. 5. Repeat step 4 with remaining motif pieces in numerical order until the motif is complete. 6. Referring to pattern, add details to the appliquéd motif using black fine-point permanent fabricmarking pen. 7. Repeat steps 3–6 with pieces from the second motif on the second bib to finish.
