MATERIALS

• 1 yard light yellow batik* • 11/4 yards multicolor­ed batik* • 11/4 yards orange batik* • 13/4 yards dark green/gold batik* • 23/4 yards white solid • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies *Tonga Vineyard batiks from Timeless Treasures used to make sample. CUTTING From light yellow batik: • Cut 10 (21/2" by fabric width) A strips. From multicolor­ed batik: • Cut 5 (21/2" by fabric width) H strips. • Cut 5 (41/2" by fabric width) I strips. From orange batik: • Cut 5 (21/2" by fabric width) B strips. • Cut 5 (41/2" by fabric width) F strips. From dark green/gold batik: • Cut 5 (41/2" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 35 (41/2") J squares. • Cut 3 (27/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 35 (27/ 8") D squares. • Cut 8 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From white solid: • Cut 3 (27/ 8" by fabric width) strips.

Subcut strips into 35 (27/ 8") C squares. • Cut 5 (21/2" by fabric width) E strips. • Cut 10 (61/2" by fabric width) G strips.

3. Sew an E strip to an A strip to an F strip with right sides together along length to make an E-A-F strip set; press. Repeat to make a total of five E-A-F strip sets.

4. Subcut the E-A-F strip sets into 70 (21/2" x 81/2") E-A-F units as shown in Figure 2.

5. Sew a G strip to an H strip with right sides together along length to make a G-H strip set; press. Repeat to make a total of five G-H strip sets.

6. Subcut the G-H strip sets into 70 (21/2" x 81/2") G-H units as shown in Figure 3.

7. Sew a G strip to an I strip with right sides together along length to make a G-I strip set; press. Repeat to make a total of five G-I strip sets.

8. Subcut the G-I strip sets into 70 (21/2" x 101/2") G-I units as shown in Figure 4.

9. Draw a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each C square.

10. Referring to Figure 5, place a C square right sides together with a D square and stitch 1/4" on each side of the marked line. Cut apart on the marked line and press the units open to make two C-D units.

11. Repeat step 10 with all C and D squares to make a total of 70 C-D units. COMPLETING THE BLOCKS

1. Select one J square and two each A-B, E-A-F, G-H, G-I and C-D units to complete one Autumn Trails block.

2. Sew an A-B unit to opposite sides of J as shown in Figure 6; press.

3. Sew an E-A-F unit to the top and bottom of the stitched unit as shown in Figure 7; press.

4. Sew a G-H unit to the top and bottom of the pieced unit as shown in Figure 8; press.

5. Sew a C-D unit to the G end of each G-I unit to make a pieced strip as shown in Figure 9; press.

6. Sew a pieced strip to opposite long sides of the pieced unit as shown in Figure 10 to complete one Autumn Trails block; press. 7. Repeat steps 1–6 to complete a total of 35 Autumn Trails blocks. COMPLETING THE QUILT Refer to the Assembly Diagram for positionin­g of blocks and rows.

1. Arrange and join five Autumn Trails blocks to make an X row referring to Figure 11; press. Repeat to make a total of four X rows. Repeat to make three Y rows, turning each block opposite those in the X rows. 2. Join the rows, alternatin­g X and Y rows, to complete the quilt top.

3. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 4. Quilt as desired. 5. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish. QW
