MATERIALS
• 1/4 yard cream tonal* • 1/ 3 yard light brown tonal* • 3/ 8 yard dark brown tonal* • 1 yard medium brown tonal* • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies *P&B Basics from P&B Textiles used to make sample.
CUTTING From cream tonal:
• Cut 3 (11/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 11/2" x 181/2" P strips and 11/2" x 201/2" Q strips, and 8 (11/2") J squares.
From light brown tonal:
• Cut 1 (31/2" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut strip into 8 (31/2") N squares. • Cut 1 (11/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 4 each 11/2" x 21/2" K rectangles and 11/2" x 51/2" I rectangles, and 8 (1") B squares. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 each 21/2" D squares, 2"x 3" C rectangles and 1"x 3" H rectangles.
From dark brown tonal:
• Cut 1 (31/2" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut strip into 10 (31/2") O squares. • Cut 1 (5" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 2 (5" x 51/2") A rectangles, 4 (1"x 3") G rectangles, 4 (1") E squares and 2 (1" x 21/2") F rectangles. From medium brown tonal: • Cut 2 (11/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 4 each 11/2" x 71/2"
L strips and 11/2" x 91/2" M strips. • Cut 4 (31/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 31/2" x 201/2"
R strips and 31/2" x 261/2" S strips. • Cut 3 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.
COMPLETING THE MUG BLOCKS
1. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each B, E and J square.
2. Referring to Figure 1, place a B square right sides together on one corner of A and stitch on the marked line. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4" and press B to the right side. Repeat with a second B on the same short end of A to complete one A-B unit. Repeat to make a second A-B unit.
3. Repeat step 2 to make two each D-E units, and B-G and reverse B-G units as shown in Figure 2.
4. Repeat step 2 with J and K to make two each J-K and reverse J-K units as shown in Figure 3.
5. Repeat step 2 with J and I to make two each I-J and reverse I-J units as shown in Figure 4.
6. To complete one Mug block, select one each A-B, D-E, B-G, J-K and I-J unit; one each reverse B-G, J-K and I-J unit; one each C, F and H rectangle; and two each L and M strips.
7. Sew the F rectangle to the E end of the D-E unit and add a B-G and reverse B-G unit to the top and bottom; press. Add an H rectangle to the top and C to the bottom to complete one handle unit as shown in Figure 5; press.
8. Sew the handle unit to the A-B unit to complete the mug unit as shown in Figure 6; press.
Sew the J-K unit to the I-J unit and the reverse J-K unit to the reverse I-J unit as shown in Figure 7; press. Join the two units to complete the steam unit.
10. Sew the steam unit to the top of the mug unit to complete the inner block as shown in Figure 8; press.
11. Sew L strips to the top and bottom, and M strips to opposite sides of the inner block to complete one Mug block referring to the block drawing; press.
12. Repeat steps 6–11 to complete a second Mug block.
COMPLETING THE NINE- PATCH BLOCKS
1. To complete one Nine-Patch block, select four N squares and five O squares. 2. Sew an N square between two O squares to make an O row as shown in Figure 9; press. Repeat to make a second O row.
3. Sew an O square between two N squares to make an N row as shown in Figure 10; press.
4. Sew the N row between the two O rows to complete one Nine-Patch block, referring to the block drawing; press.
5. Repeat steps 1–4 to complete a second Nine-Patch block.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
Refer to the Assembly Diagram for positioning of blocks and borders.
1. Join one each Mug and Nine-Patch block to make a row; press. Repeat to make a second row.
2. Join the two rows to complete the pieced center; press.
3. Sew P strips to the top and bottom and Q strips to opposite sides of the pieced center; press.
4. Sew R strips to the top and bottom, and S strips to opposite sides of the pieced center to complete the quilt top; press.
5. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 6. Quilt as desired. 7. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
