Get Well Wishes
October is breast cancer awareness month and the perfect time to sort your pink scraps and make them count.
MATERIALS
• 6 different light pink fat quarters • 8 different medium-to- dark pink fat
quarters • 1/4 yard dark pink batik • 5/ 8 yard dark pink tonal • 11/2 yards beige tonal • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread • Basic sewing tools and supplies
CUTTING
Select three light pink (1, 2 and 3) and four medium-to-dark pink fat quarters (1, 2, 3 and 4) for Quarter Cabin 1 blocks. Keep these fabrics together for cutting. Repeat with the remaining fat quarters to select three light pink (4, 5 and 6) and four medium-to-dark pink (5, 6, 7 and 8) fabrics for Quarter Cabin 2 blocks. Cut Quarter Cabin 1 fabrics as directed in the cutting section that follows. Repeat the same cutting with the Quarter Cabin 2 fabrics except label with piece letter and block number; for example: A2, B2, etc.
Cut O rectangles listed from both Quarter Cabin 1 and 2 fabrics to total 92 O rectangles. From light pink 1: • Cut 1 (31/2" x 20") strip.
Subcut strip into 2 (31/2") A1 squares. • Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 6 (21/2" x 51/2")
O rectangles.
From light pink 2:
• Cut 1 (2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 2 each 2" x 31/2" B1
and 2"x 5" C1 strips. • Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 6 (21/2" x 51/2")
O rectangles.
From light pink 3:
• Cut 2 (21/2" x 20") strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 21/2" x 5" D1
and 21/2" x 7" E1 strips. • Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 6 (21/2" x 51/2")
O rectangles.
From medium-to-dark pink 1:
• Cut 2 (2" x 20") strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 2"x 7" F1
and 2" x 81/2" G1 strips. • Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 7 (21/2" x 51/2")
O rectangles.
From medium-to-dark pink 2:
• Cut 3 (31/2" x 20") strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 31/2" x 81/2" H1
and 31/2" x 111/2" I1 strips. • Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 7 (21/2" x 51/2")
O rectangles.
From medium-to-dark pink 3:
• Cut 4 (2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 2" x 111/2" J1
and 2" x 13" K1 strips. • Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 7 (21/2" x 51/2")
O rectangles.
From medium-to-dark pink 4:
• Cut 4 (3" x 20") strips. Subcut strips into 2 each 3" x 13" L1 and
3" x 151/2" M1 strips. • Cut 1 (51/2" x 20") strip. Subcut strip into 7 (21/2" x 51/2") O
rectangles.
From dark pink batik:
• Cut 1 (51/2" by fabric width) strip. Subcut strip into 4 (51/2") P squares.
From dark pink tonal:
• Cut 6 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips.
From beige tonal:
• Cut 2 (221/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 2 (221/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 4 N triangles.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. For one Quarter Cabin 1 block, select one A1 square and one strip each B1–M1.
2. Sew B1 to one side of A and add C1 to the adjacent side as shown in Figure 1; press.
3. Sew D1 to the B1 side and E1 to the C1 side of the pieced unit as shown in Figure 2; press.
4. Continue adding pieces in alphabetical order to the previously stitched strip sides to complete one Quarter Cabin 1 block referring to the block drawing; press.
5. Repeat steps 1–4 with the second set of A1–M1 pieces to make a second Quarter Cabin 1 block.
6. Repeat steps 2–4 with the A2–M2 pieces to make two Quarter Cabin 2 blocks referring to the block drawing.
COMPLETING THE QUILT
Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed for positioning of blocks and borders.
1. Join one each Quarter Cabin 1 and Quarter Cabin 2 block to make a row; press. Repeat to make a second row. Join the rows to complete the center unit; press.
2. Sew an N triangle to opposite sides of the center unit; press. Sew the remaining N triangles to the remaining sides of the center unit to complete the pieced center; press.
3. Join 22 O rectangles on the long edges to make a pieced strip; press. Trim 3/4" off each end of the strip to make a 51/2" x 43" strip. Repeat to make a total of four pieced strips. Set aside remaining O rectangles for another project. Note: Measure the pieced center before trimming the pieced strips and trim strips to fit the center, removing an equal amount from each end.
4. Sew a pieced strip to opposite sides of the pieced center; press.
5. Sew a P square to each end of each remaining pieced strip; press. Sew these strips to the remaining sides of the pieced center; press.
6. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics on page 94. 7. Quilt as desired. 8. Bind edges referring to Quilting Basics on page 94 to finish.
