MATERIALS
• 7/ 8 yard light gray batik* • 15/ 8 yards dark gray batik* • 4 yards white-with- gray batik* • Backing to size • Batting to size • Thread* • Basic sewing tools and supplies *Solstice fabric collection by Fourth & Sixth Designs for Island Batik; Superior Threads So Fine! thread used to make sample.
CUTTING From light gray batik:
• Cut 4 (37/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 32 (37/ 8") C squares and 5 (21/2") H squares. Cut each C square in half on 1 diagonal to make 64 C triangles. • Cut 3 (31/2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 32 (31/2") D squares. From dark gray batik: • Cut 6 (31/2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 64 (31/2") E squares. • Cut 1 (21/2" by fabric width) strip.
Subcut strip into 12 (21/2") I squares. • Cut 8 (21/4" by fabric width) binding strips. From white-with-gray batik: • Cut 9 (31/2" by fabric width) strips.
Subcut strips into 96 (31/2") A squares. • Cut 4 (37/ 8" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 32 (37/ 8") squares. Cut each square in half on 1 diagonal to make 64 B triangles. • Cut 3 (121/2" by fabric width) strips. Subcut strips into 40 (21/2" x 121/2") F strips and 8 (21/2") G squares. • Cut 7 (61/2" by fabric width) J/K strips.
COMPLETING THE BLOCKS
1. Sew A to E to make an A-E unit as shown in Figure 1; press. Repeat to make a total of 64 A-E units.
2. Join two A-E units to make a dark corner unit as shown in Figure 2; press. Repeat to make 32 dark corner units.
3. Sew B to C along the diagonal to make a B-C unit as shown in Figure 3; press. Repeat to make a total of 64 B-C units.
4. Sew a B-C unit to D to make a B-C-D unit and a B-C unit to A to make an A-B-C unit as shown in Figure 4; press. Repeat to make a total of 32 each B-C-D and A-B-C units.
5. Join one each B-C-D and A-B-C unit to make a light corner unit as shown in Figure 5; press. Repeat to make a total of 32 light corner units.
