Rapp is 3rd among 1A schools in academic standings competition

-

The Virginia High School League ( VHSL) recently released its Wells Fargo Cup academic standings for the 2014-2015 school year — and Rappahannock County High School finished the year tied for third in the Group 1A standings.

RCHS accumulated 65 points in the Wells Fargo competition, just 10 points behind the Wells Fargo Cup champion, based on the strengths of their VHSL theater and scholastic bowl state finishes. Standings in the Wells Fargo competition are based on points awarded for advancement in VHSL’s state competitions. Academic activities with state playoffs include theater, scholastic bowl, forensics, debate, creative writing, newspaper, yearbook and magazine.

The Wells Fargo Cup was first awarded by VHSL in 1990. One trophy is awarded to the first- place finishers in each of six enrollment classifications. RCHS achieved its third- place finish despite only having two activities that qualified for points. Approximately 50 schools are included in the group 1A classification; RCHS is among the smallest in student population. But size did not play a part in their rankings as the teams aimed high and scored big in the competitions.

The RCHS drama department, led by teacher Russell Paulette, competed in the VHSL one-act play competition last fall, winning the conference and regional competitions and qualifying for the state competition. The Scholastic Bowl team, led by teacher Dave Naser, finished the 2014-2015 season as conference, regional and state champions.

Paulette reports that plans are underway for this year’s fall theater competition with tryouts scheduled to be held soon. Scholastic Bowl coach Dave Naser and assistant coach Brad Weeks, are also making plans for this season’s upcoming matches.
