Allen Young Stokes, Jr.
Allen Young Stokes, Jr., 92, of Sperryville, Virginia, died at home on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 after a brief illness. Mr. Stokes was born in Farmville, Virginia, the son of the late Allen Young Stokes and Katherine Scott Stokes. He is survived by his wife, Harriet Bowling Stokes; and his children, William Allen Stokes and his wife Patricia, and Anne Stokes Callahan and her husband Daniel. He is also survived by his grandchildren, William Allen Stokes, Jr. and his wife Claire, John Pilcher Stokes, Amy Katherine Callahan, and Carrie Elizabeth Callahan.
He attended The McCallie School, Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1941-1942, attended Hampden Sydney College from 1942-1943, served as a surgical technician in the US Army from 1943-1945 in both France and Belgium during World War II, and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic and State University in 1949.
Allen was a lifelong friend of Rappahannock County and its people. He was a farmer and resided at Orchard Hill Farm since 1958 where he raised Charolais cattle and formerly had a large apple orchard. He was past Chairman of the Rappahannock County Planning Commission, President of the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association, Vice President of the Virginia Carolina Charolais Breeders Association, President of the Rappahannock Cold Storage in Sperryville, Director of the Rappahannock Fruit Growers, Director of the Skyline Juice Cooperative, Director of Lord Fairfax Community College, Director of First Commonwealth Insurance Company of Richmond, and Director of Second Bank and Trust of Culpeper. Mr. Stokes was an active member of Culpeper Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and Elder.
