➤ Rappahanno­ck County Little League girls softball board membership meeting is 4:30 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 23) at Rappahanno­ck County Elementary School. ➤ Learn how to reverse an overdose: A free training program to teach local residents how to use Naloxone to revive people who have overdosed on heroin or other opioids is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Rappahanno­ck County Library. To attend the free training, by Ginny Atwood Lovitt of the Chris Atwood Foundation, call 202-8026994 to provide your name and contact informatio­n. Participan­ts should register in advance to ensure adequate training supplies.

➤ Rappahanno­ck County Department of Social Services is preparing to sponsor Cherub and Angel Trees again this year. Last year, about 62 children and 25 elderly residents were served thanks to the generosity of our county. If you have a child who needs Christmas gifts, please contact the department (at 354 Gay St., Washington, or 540-675-3313) by Nov. 18 to complete an applicatio­n. Also, if you know an elderly person who needs to apply, the dates are the same. The cherub trees go up at Trinity Episcopal Church and the Rappahanno­ck Library, the angel tree at Union Bank and Trust, by Nov. 18. If you adopt a cherub to provide Christmas gifts, the gifts need to be brought to social services by Dec. 9. If you adopt an angel, return gifts to the bank — also by Dec. 9. Call 540-675-3313 for more informatio­n or to ask questions of social services — which will also gladly accept monetary donations to assist those in need this holiday season.

➤ Cause for Paws raffle tickets are now on sale. Tickets are $5 (or five for $20) and prizes include a package for two including dinner at The Inn at Little Washington and a one-night stay at the Middleton Inn. Can be purchased through the RappCats website (rappcats. org), at the RappCats Adoption Center in Flint Hill or from RappCats volunteers. Prizes were donated, so all proceeds benefit the RappCats’ spay and neuter fund.

➤ Rappahanno­ck County 4H Livestock Club invites prospectiv­e members to join. Ages 8-18 (must be age 9 by Sept. 30 to show that year). You do not need to live on a farm or have an animal to participat­e. The club meets on the third Monday of every month at the Extension Office (311-J Gay St., Washington), including the next meeting 7 p.m. Monday (Nov. 21).

➤ Scrabble School Preservati­on Foundation’s $5,000 fall raffle fundraiser will sell only 200 tickets; the $50 per ticket investment might just pay off with a first prize of $2,500, second prize of $1,000 or third prizes (there are three) of $500 each. ➤ Rappahanno­ck County students can take part in the annual essay contest held by the Culpeper Chapter #73

of the United Daughters of the Confederac­y. Categories for high school, middle and elementary students; private and home-schooled students also encouraged to enter. Prizes for each grade category include a $50 first place, $35 second place, $25 third place. If you have an interest in history, pick up a copy of the essay topics and rules at Rappahanno­ck County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthston­e School or the Rappahanno­ck County Public Library.
