➤ Learn how to reverse an overdose: A free training program to teach local residents how to use Naloxone to revive people who have overdosed on heroin or other opioids is 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Oct. 27 — not Tuesday, as last week’s paper had it) at Rappahanno­ck County Library. To attend the free training, by Ginny Atwood Lovitt of the Chris Atwood Foundation, call 202-802-6994 to provide your name and contact informatio­n. Participan­ts should register in advance to ensure adequate training supplies.

➤ Girl Scout Troop 692 in Rappahanno­ck County is collecting candy for the soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital. If you would like to donate your excess candy from Halloween or donate a bag of candy, please email suzannetor­osian@comcast.net.

➤ The Rappahanno­ck County Democratic Committee general meeting is 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the library. All are welcome, and you don't have to be a member to participat­e. For more, contact Ross O'Donoghue at 540-9878019.

The Rappahanno­ck County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting for October is cancelled; there are no applicatio­ns.

➤ The next meeting of of the Special Education Advisory Committee will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, at 6 in the RCES auditorium. Region 4 Coordinato­r Nancy Anderson will speak on the Virginia Department of Education’s “I’m Determined” project, sharing resources and activities to support parents in helping their children to strengthen their skills in self-advocacy.

➤ Rappahanno­ck County Department of Social Services is preparing to sponsor Cherub and Angel Trees again this year. Last year, about 62 children and 25 elderly residents were served thanks to the generosity of our county. If you have a child who needs Christmas gifts, please contact the department (at 354 Gay St., Washington, or 540-675-3313) by Nov. 18 to complete an applicatio­n. Also, if you know an elderly person who needs to apply, the dates are the same. The cherub trees go up at Trinity Episcopal Church and the Rappahanno­ck Library, the angel tree at Union Bank and Trust, by Nov. 18. If you adopt a cherub to provide Christmas gifts, the gifts need to be brought to social services by Dec. 9. If you adopt an angel, return gifts to the bank — also by Dec. 9. Call 540675-3313 for more informatio­n or to ask questions of social services — which will also gladly accept monetary donations to assist those in need this holiday season.

➤ The Inn at Little Washington Farmer’s Market is open 10:30 to 2 through this Sunday (Oct. 30) at the Parsonage Garden. Local vendors and artisans offer meats, cheeses, soups, produce, tea, jewelry, pottery and more; the Inn’s kitchen provides a selection of breads, pastries, jams and pickles as well as North Carolina-style pulled pork barbeque. ➤ Cause for Paws raffle tickets are now on sale. Tickets are $5 (or five for $20) and prizes include a package for two including dinner at The Inn at Little Washington and a one-night stay at the Middleton Inn. Can be purchased through the RappCats website (rappcats. org), at the RappCats Adoption Center in Flint Hill or from RappCats volunteers. Prizes were donated, so all proceeds benefit the RappCats’ spay and neuter fund.
