Helen King Platt
Helen King Platt died September 27 at her home in Rappahannock County. She was 102 years old.
Helen was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1914. She received a BA degree in Home Economics from the University of North Carolina at Goldsboro and an MA at Kansas State University. She migrated to the Washington DC area when her late husband, Charles Morris Platt, was serving in the Pacific during World War II. At that time, she worked at the U.S. Department of Labor. She taught Home Economics at both the high school and college level. When she retired in 1982, she was working in the Voter Registration office in Fairfax County.
Helen came to Rappahannock County in 1968 when she and her husband purchased a weekend residence built by our own Phil Irwin of Caledonia Farm. After two major additions to the house, she and Charles moved to Rappahannock full time in 1982.
Once in Rappahannock County, Helen was very active, serving at various times as Treasurer of the Rappahannock County Library and the Rappahannock Garden Club. She also served on the Scholarship Committee of the Child Care and Learning Center. Helen was an enthusiastic gardener and was a member of a number of local bridge groups, continuing to play weekly with a group of dedicated friends until just three months before her death.
Helen is predeceased by her husband, Charles, and by her son Anthony Carter Platt.
She is survived by her son Andrew Morris Platt, three grandchildren, Erin C. Platt of Rappahannock County, Randall C. Platt of Dunstable, MA, and Kevin M. F. Platt of Philadelphia, PA, four great grandchildren, and many dear friends.
A remembrance for Helen will be held by the family at a later date. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Child Care and Learning Center, P.O. Box 520, Washington, VA 22747.
