Region 4 Coordinator Nancy Anderson will speak on the Virginia Department of Education’s “I’m Determined” project, sharing resources and activities to support parents in helping their children to strengthen their skills in self-advocacy.

➤ Rapp at Home members
and guests travel together Nov. 13 to Staunton for a 2 p.m. performance of “Twelfth Night.” Preference is given to Rapp at Home members but others are welcome for an additional fee. ➤ Rappahannock County Department of Social Services is sponsoring Cherub and Angel Trees again this year. Last year, about 62 children and 25 elderly residents were served thanks to the generosity of our county. If you have a child who needs Christmas gifts, please contact the department (at 354 Gay St., Washington, or 540-675-3313) by Nov. 18 to complete an application. Also, if you know an elderly person who needs to apply, the dates are the same. The cherub trees go up at Trinity Episcopal Church and the Rappahannock Library, the angel tree at Union Bank and Trust, by Nov. 18. If you adopt a cherub to provide Christmas gifts, the gifts need to be brought to social services by Dec. 9. If you adopt an angel, return gifts to the bank — also by Dec. 9. ➤ All orders for the RCHS Band Citrus Fruit Fundraiser will be available for pickup 3:30 to 6 p.m. Dec. 9 and
8:30 to 11 a.m. Dec. 10 at the Rappahannock CFC Farm & Home Center, Washington.
➤ RAAC's Mitchell Arts Fund holds its first-ever grant workshop from 10 to noon Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Rappahannock Library. Members of the Mitchell Arts Fund committee will go over the 2017 grant application and new guidelines and answer your questions about submitting a proposal. All potential and past applicants are welcome and encouraged to attend. For those who can’t make the workshop, a summary of questions and answers will be posted on the RAAC website (raac.org) later in December. Since 2012, RAAC has awarded more than $110,000 to 42 Rappahannock artists and organizations. Application and guidelines for 2017 grants will be available on the RAAC website Dec. 1.
➤ Girl Scout Troop 692 in Rappahannock County is collecting candy for the soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital. If you would like to donate your excess candy from Halloween or donate a bag of candy, please email suzannetorosian@comcast.net.
➤ Cause for Paws raffle tickets are now on sale. Tickets are $5 (or five for $20) and prizes include a package for two including dinner at The Inn at Little Washington and a onenight stay at the Middleton Inn. Can be purchased through the RappCats website (rappcats. org), at the RappCats Adoption Center in Flint Hill or from RappCats volunteers. Prizes were donated, so all proceeds benefit the RappCats’ spay and neuter fund.
➤ Rappahannock County 4H Livestock Club invites prospective members to join. Ages 8-18 (must be age 9 by Sept. 30 to show that year). You do not need to live on a farm or have an animal to participate. The club meets on the third Monday of every month at the Extension Office (311-J Gay St., Washington), including the next meeting 7 p.m. Monday (Nov. 21).
➤ Scrabble School Preservation Foundation’s $5,000 fall raffle fundraiser will sell only 200 tickets; the $50 per ticket investment might just pay off with a first prize of $2,500, second prize of $1,000 or third prizes (there are three) of $500 each. ➤ Rappahannock County students can take part in the annual essay contest held by the Culpeper Chapter #73 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Categories for high school, middle and elementary students; private and home-schooled students also encouraged to enter. Prizes for each grade category include a $50 first place,
$35 second place, $25 third place. If you have an interest in history, pick up a copy of the essay topics and rules at Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School or the Rappahannock County Public Library.
