-

Age 86 Born in San Antonio, Texas, on November 11, 1930 Died in Springfield, Virginia, on December 27, 2016

Marguerite Ellen (Gilliam) Tuthill was the daughter of Charles Thaddeus Gilliam and Marguerite Louise Comeaux. Marguerite is survived by two daughters: Diane Wood, and husband, James, and Denise Rogers, and husband, William. She is survived by four grandchildren: Britton, Samuel, and Jillian Wood, and Michael Rogers. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren. Marguerite grew up in Altadena, California, and was a graduate of Whittier College. She did graduate studies at Southern Methodist University. She married Donald Tuthill in 1955, and the couple soon embarked on a Navy career that would take them on many different tours of duty, including a six-year sojourn in Japan. Teaching and learning were her lifelong passions. Marguerite taught school in California, and when she moved to Rappahannock County Virginia, she taught third grade at Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly for a number of years, until her retirement in 2002. She was a member of the Rappahannock County Retired Teachers Association. Marguerite's appreciation of the outdoors was large enough to contain both her golden San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California and her azure Blue Ridge Mountains that she saw from the deck of her cedar log cabin on the Covington River, just outside of Washington, Virginia. She enjoyed caring for her ten-acre property, and the deer and wild birds on it. She was known for her love of animals, both wild and tame, and rescued a number of cats and dogs over the years. The family wishes to honor this love by requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League.
