Marian Grant White

-

Marian Grant White, 94, passed away peacefully on December 21st, 2016. Marian was born to Neva Beahm Grant and Norman Richard Grant in Washington, DC. She spent her childhood in Washington and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1940. After completion of secretarial school, she secured a job in the front office of the Postmaster General. Marian was later recruited to work in the US Bureau of Censorship, an emergency agency created during WWII. She married her childhood beau Jim White when he returned from duty in Europe following the war. They then embarked on the adventures and tribulations that come with the married life of a career Army officer. Marian and Jim created loving homes around the globe for their family and together with their three children, took advantage of all the opportunities that their stations afforded – biking the Appian Way, skiing the Alps and snorkeling deserted atolls in the Marshall Islands. Along the way, Marian´s love of literature led her to pursue a degree in Library Sciences from the University of Michigan. After Jim´s retirement from the Army, she and Jim built their dream house on acreage near Flint Hill, VA, surrounded by gardens and woods. It provided many wonderful memories over the years for their grown children, grandchildren, brothers and friends. Marian was preceded in death by her husband, US Army Colonel (ret) James Todd White, Jr., her brother, Richard Arthur Grant, and granddaughter, Carolyn Jennifer White. Survivors include her children, James Todd White III (Maureen) of Silver Spring, MD, Jill White Cooke (Tom) of Richmond, VA, John Moore White (Mary Ann) of Tacoma, WA; brother, Donald Elliot Grant (Mary Ann) of Iuka, MS; seven grandchildren, Todd Cooke (Sallie), US Army MSGT James T. White IV, Brad Cooke (Shayna), Grant White, Andrew White (Danielle), Peter White and Julia White. There are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins surviving. A real delight for Marian in her later years was watching her “second-set”, the great-grandchildren grow: Hailey and Katie Cooke, Cyrus and Sage Cooke. We will all remember “G-Mom” for her loving, supportive and generous nature. The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to her dear friends in the Villa at Lakewood Manor, as well as her caregivers and hospice workers from Lakewood Manor Health Services and Bon Secours. Marian will be laid to rest next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org. Online condolences at www.woodyfuneralhomeparham.com.
