Dwell Fine Art finds a home
Doors opened for the newest shop in Washington, Dwell Fine Art, located at 261 Main Street. Hayley Sykes opened the gallery because she loves art and artists and thinks it’s important to create interesting places for people to gather in our communities.
“Art galleries are fun places that stir all sorts of reactions in people and I think that is a good thing,” she says.
Her hope is that Dwell Fine Art will become a locus for people of all walks of life that enjoy engaging with art and artists and perhaps want to purchase something to beautify their home or as a memento of their travels to Rappahannock.
Dwell Fine Art is proud to bring together a unique collective of original artwork by established and emerging artists. The gallery houses original art works as well as archival prints of selected works.
Currently, Hayley juggles a corporate role as well as managing the gallery, but her longer term ambition is to work full-time in the arts supporting the local community.
“This area has been good to me so the gallery is a small token of giving back that I hope will enrich the area and bring people momentary joy,” she says.
For now she currently represents eight artists and will be at 12 to 15 by year’s end. The vast majority are Virginians.

BBQ DOUSED
Due to potentially severe weather this weekend Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue has decided to cancel its breakfast and barbecue lunch for this Saturday, Sept. 15. They appreciate the continued support but want to ensure the safety of their loyal guests as well as their breakfast crew. Be sure to read the paper each week for a new date.
Also, the University of Virginia’s Connaughton Gallery has postponed the reception for Two If By Land, a new show featuring paintings by Washington artist Kevin H. Adams and Giselle Gautreau. They will provide updated information regarding the reception in Charlottesville as soon as it is available.
LIFE CYCLE STUDIES
According to Christina Loocke, the children at the Child Care and Learning Center, from infants to school-agers, are having fun with multiple life-cycle studies. The children are raising monarch butterflies from eggs and caterpillars they found in their butterfly garden and grey tree frogs from tadpoles they found in a vernal pool that appeared at CCLC after all the rain. They are also raising chickens from eggs and gardens from seeds. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, these studies include math, art, language and literacy, social-emotional skills, science, fitness, and music.

GARDEN CLUB TRIP
The Garden Club likes to have one or two field trips a year instead of a regular meeting. So last September they went to the Benedictine Monastery in Bristow, and this year they are going
to the Birdsong Pleasure Gardens in Luray on Wednesday, Sept 19. The gardens are modeled after the Pleasure Gardens of England’s 18th and 19th centuries and offer a
variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials with paths, water features and mountain vistas.
COOLER DAYS
I hope everyone enjoyed
the cooler temperatures we had over the weekend. I know I did. The fall season is around the corner, which fills me with great anticipation for cooler days and nights.
Signs of the beginning of fall: Rappahannock Co-op brightened by mums, leaves are changing colors, the air feels crisper, and Halloween costumes have arrived in the stores.
The Autumn Equinox arrives Sept. 23, the first day of fall and the start of shorter days and longer nights for us.
We are surely blessed to live in Rappahannock County with its abundance of fall colors. I am looking forward to the new season.
