Garden Club continues 66-year tradition
‘A new addition to the holiday offering this year — a grapevine wreath, made from Gadino vines!’
Tis the season to get ready — and while you are not likely thinking about the holidays yet, the members of the Rappahannock County Garden Club surely are.
The club is preparing to launch its 66th “Greens Workshop” where they make and decorate wreaths, swags, garlands and centerpieces — for sale to the community.
On December 2, the Washington Fire Hall will be transformed into a workshop. In preparation for that date, clamping machines will come out of storage, bags and bags of greens will be collected, conditioned, trimmed and bundled — pinecones will be sprayed and wired, and colorful ribbon will be purchased in bulk. Between December 3 and 5th, they will continue the long-held tradition of transforming collected pine, spruce, cedar, arborvitae and leyland cypress into decorations for churches, businesses and homes.
Beginning in 1952, proceeds from the greens workshop sales went to support the local community; the treasurer that year reported a profit of $29.10!
And 66 years later, profits from the club’s sales continue to support the youth of Rappahannock County. Last year the club sent three children to Camp Vesuvius,
The deadline to place orders is Saturday, November 17.
gave a donation to Lyt Wood to support his nature daycamp, and sent two deserving high school graduates off to college.
The Garden Club hopes to do the same this year — with your help.
This year, beginning today, Oct. 25, orders can be placed online at rappgardenclub.org or by emailing Joyce Wenger at Joyce@wengerandwenger. com.
The deadline to place orders is Saturday, November 17. Orders may be picked up December 5 (2:30 to 5 p.m.) and December 6 (9 a.m. to noon). Quantities are limited, so don’t miss out.
