Town out of balance

-

When the seesaw is too high on one end one of the kids falls off. What glory and perfection is that to be remembered by?

With the Country Cafe, which is leaving its current location after 30 years — and Rae’s place before — this was the heart of the town of Washington. What happened to live and let live?

It saddens me when some grow beyond their means and others have to go. The team that worked and made the Inn grow were not recognized last year when the Inn’s reunion came up, which were many people I know and worked with myself in the early years. So there are many stories and lives behind those beautiful flowers and landscapes that live the walkway in Little Washington.

I am grateful to have been around in the 1970’s, working and living in the town, and remember what a community was like. I even supported the Inn. Now I say, shame on you!

What’s left of Washington is very limited. In fact, not much is left. Steve Critzer and his tractors, Real Estate III, a church and the cemetery. Let’s hope these places stay and the people keep the balance of what’s left of Rappahannock and the heart of what we all treasure. And let’s hope the Masonic Cemetery won’t be dug up over where the dead are at rest to make a new look or a new way.

Good luck to the Cafe and David Huff for serving the community, and you will always be remembered not for greed but respect, as a person and a business. The history cannot be changed but we can learn from it.
