Fall back, folks!

-

Daylight Saving Time comes to an end this weekend. Which means set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. The change officially comes at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. The change means the sunrise and sunset will be about one hour earlier on Nov. 3, providing more daylight in the morning hours.

The transformation to standard time is also the perfect occasion to change the batteries in your smoke detectors before they dyingly signal beep, beep, beep in the middle of the night while you’re trying to sleep.

SPEAKING OF PREVENTION

The Child Care and Learning Center gives a big thank you to our Volunteer Washington Fire and Rescue Department. Last Friday they visited the CCLC to talk with the children and allow them to explore their emergency vehicles and firefighter suits. The activity complements the preschool fire safety curriculum that the teachers have been teaching this month.

Fire Chief Ann Speiker, Assistant Chief Bobby Smoot, along with volunteer EMS Russ Collins talked to the children and the children exuberantly spoke about the things they were learning about fire safety.

Adults should also remember what Sparky the fire dog has taught us: when there’s a fire, first dial 911, always get low where there is no smoke, have an emergency escape plan, and STOP, DROP and ROLL if your clothes catch on fire.

Always support your volunteer fire/ rescue departments. You never know when you might need them.

BOO!

Halloween is the time for the young (and not so young) to hit the streets and visit your doorstep for trick-or-treat, so best be ready with candy — and if you’re driving, be on the lookout for those little princesses, witches and goblins.

Little Washington’s annual Halloween festivities begin at 5:30 on Thursday, Oct. 31, and last until 8:30, well after the sun has gone down. Trick-or-treaters of all ages can stroll around the town and visit homes and businesses, many of which will also be decorated, for goodies and treats. Be sure to wear your costumes and join in one of Rappahannock’s most enjoyable and family friendly events!

The Inn at Little Washington will be handing out candy at the front door. Washington Baptist Church will be ready to greet Trickor-Treaters around 5:30 p.m., and in addition to restrooms they will be offering cider, juice, cookies and candy outside along Mt. Salem Avenue across the street from the old jail.

Trinity will open its doors at 6 p.m. to welcome trick-or-treaters of all ages. In the Parish Hall, there will be free hot dogs, chips, candy for the little trick-or-treaters. And Quicke Mart will be giving out candy along with some of the businesses in town.

FAREWELL, CAFE

After 30 successful years, the Country Cafe at 4 p.m. this afternoon, Oct. 31, will close its doors. There’s no word on whether owner/chef David Huff will reopen in a new location. Please be sure to stop by the Cafe on Main Street and wish David, his sister Betty Crawford, and the entire staff godspeed.
