Veterans Day at RCPS
The Annual Veterans Day Program, presented by the RCHS Band Boosters, was held Monday in the RCHS Gymnasium. Attendees were greeted by a beautiful tribute of American flags placed along the bus loop by high school students. The event began with the Presentation of the Colors, which was led by the RCHS Freedom Club, and a performance of the “National Anthem” by the RCHS Concert Band.
This year’s event featured special guest speaker Staff Sergeant Jennifer Shanks of the United States Air Force. After being introduced by her son and RCHS student Chris, Shanks shared a powerful message about the importance of being of service to others. The gymnasium, which was filled with students, veterans, and family members hung on each word as she expressed the importance of honoring the men and women who have served our country.
“Veterans represent bravery, courage, lives lost over many generations, the missed holidays and special events, and those who were not given the opportunity to say good-bye to loved ones in order to fight for freedom,” said Shanks. “Students, if there is anything you take away from today, I hope it is the importance of honoring our veterans and serving others.”
The band, under the direction of Jason Guira, provided a masterful performance featuring songs such as “Celebration of Taps” and “Armed Forces-The Pride of America!,” during which veterans in attendance were asked to stand to be recognized and honored.
The program concluded with refreshments for the veterans and their families as a gesture of appreciation for their service.
