Ann Spieker

- — Bob Hurley for Foothills Forum

Ann Spieker: Former Rappahannock County High School teacher and sports coach; member Rappahannock Recreation Facilities Authority; Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad; EMT/Firefighter Fairfax County; Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, chief for 15 years. Moved to Washington from Sherando (Augusta County), Va., in 1972.

The Spark: “When I got my first call as an EMT it was an adrenaline rush — I got hooked. Helping sick people in emergency medical situations is so satisfying. To see their smiles when they are revived and know things are going to be ok — that’s what keeps me going.”

Proudest Achievement: “I am most proud of establishing Rappahannock High School’s girls’ cross-country track team and later the girls’ basketball team. When I started teaching in 1972 there were no girls sports at the high school. Now, our Lady Panthers are involved in a variety of sports teams.

I’m grateful to have had a hand in creating those opportunities.” Biggest Challenge:

“We have 54 people actively involved in the WVFD. Working out the logistics for fire and rescue as well as administrative support is no easy task. It takes a real team effort to keep things running smoothly, which is why I think many new volunteer recruits are drawn to our company.”

Why It Matters: “Simply put, a member of our community might have suffered severe injury or even died had we not shown up. About 90 percent of our calls are medically related and for so many, we as first responders, can help make a difference as to whether their condition results in a healthy outcome.” Favorite Rappahannock Treasure:

“By far, the rolling, rural countryside. For many years I rode horses all around the county and marveled at the natural beauty. This truly is a special place.”
