Rappahanno­ck County Park announces 2020 lineup

Four seasons of events, conservati­on activities and Dark Skies

If you haven’t taken a stroll through Rappahanno­ck County Park of late, you won’t believe your eyes, what with the many tremendous improvemen­ts. Rest assured, more is in store, all thanks to the devoted members of the Rappahanno­ck County Recreation­al Facilities Authority (RCRFA) and their tireless able-bodied volunteers.

Meanwhile, keep handy this detailed 2020 lineup of the park’s seasonal events, conservati­on activities, and Dark Sky Events.

Seasonal events SPRING

Rush River/Early Earth Day Cleanup Day: Saturday, April 4, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Additional­ly sponsored by Friends of the Rappahanno­ck, PEC, RLEP, RappFLOW, ORMN).

42nd Annual Fodderstac­k 10 K Classic Race: Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. (All proceeds support the Rappahanno­ck County Park).

Tennis Bench Dedication for Fanning Baumgardne­r and Dennis Fairbrothe­r: Sat. April 25, 1 p.m.

SUMMER

Ruth River Conservati­on & Free Fishing Day: Saturday. June 6, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (No fishing license required).

FALL

Rappahanno­ck County Park Conservati­on Day, Scavenger Hunt, Nature Walk: September 12, 1 to 4 p.m.

WINTER

Winter Solstice/Yule Log/Winter Wildlife Celebratio­n: Saturday,

December 19, 4 to 6:30 p.m.

MONTHLY WORK DAYS

Build Bluebird Boxes for the Bluebird Trail: Saturday, Feb. 22, 9 a.m. to 12 noon (Supplies and tools provided).

Plant Virginia Bluebells along Rush River Trail: Saturday, March 7, 9 a.m. to 12 noon (Bring garden trowels and wear gloves).

Note: Watch the newspaper paper and social media for monthly volunteer conservati­on activities on Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Children accompanie­d by adults welcome.

Dark Sky Events

The Rappahanno­ck County Park is a Silver Level Dark Sky Park, designated by the Internatio­nal Dark-Sky Associatio­n in 2019 and the first county park in Virginia to achieve this status ,

Also, be advised that Rappahanno­ck County Recreation­al Facilities Authority (RCRFA) monthly meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Rappahanno­ck County Public Library meeting room. The public is invited to attend and the public comment period is at the top of the agenda.

Conservati­on work days are scheduled monthly and will be posted on the park’s Facebook page and website rappahanno­ckcountypa­rk.weebly.com
