➜ NATURE EXPLORATIO­N SERIES:

The Seasons and the Groundhog's Shadow, 10 a.m. to Noon, at James Madison's Montpelier. Celebrate Groundhog Day with a family-friendly walking tour exploring the science behind the groundhog's shadow. Learn how the cyclical changes in nature, called phenology, helped Madison determine when to plant and when to harvest. We will stroll the grounds looking for current phenologic­al clues to determine if the groundhog's prediction is true. $10/person RSVP at www.montpelier.org/events

➜ CHILI DINNER:

The Jefferson Ruritan Club will have a chili dinner from 4-7 p.m. at the Jefferson Baptist Church Fellowship Hall (behind the church), 18498 Springs Rd, Jeffersont­on. Dinner includes all-youcan-eat various types of chili (plus all the fixings), hot dogs, salad & dessert. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for ages 6-12, and free for 5 and under. The Jefferson Ruritan Club is a local community service organizati­on helping our community to be a better place. ➜ BLACK HISTORY MONTH:

The Scrabble School Preservati­on Foundation, Castleton, will celebrate Black History Month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Special guest Lillian Aylor will discuss her published memoir, “I'll Get It Done: A Life Journey in Rappahanno­ck”. In the book, Lillian shares the story of her early life growing up during segregatio­n in the Gid Brown Hollow area of the county in a house without running water or electricit­y. Free and open to the public. Book signing and light refreshmen­ts to follow.
