unxsutawney Phil could not find his shadow on Sunday, which means we’re in for an early spring. Actually, it would appear spring has already arrived.

That said, it’s still only February, and we surely could use a deep snow for groundwater and stream-flow sake.

In the meantime, ladies, bring out those flip flops and carpies.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The Rappahannock Historical Society will host The Carver 4-County Museum’s traveling exhibit entitled, “African Americans and the Vote” for the community in honor of Black History Month.

The exhibit will be at the Historical Society building on Gay Street on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., during the month of February. The society will also be open on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 22 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to experience the exhibit.

Prepared by the museum’s curator, Terry Miller, the exhibit is grounded in the XVth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and includes the first recorded lists of registered “colored” voters (the year 1867) for Rappahannock County after the Civil

War, when Virginia was under Military Rule.

The lists have been transcribed and enlarged for easy reading. A photocopy of the original list for each of the five districts — Washington, Flint Hill, Sperryville, Amissville, and Woodville — will be available for visitors to review and enjoy.

The exhibit is enhanced with several artifacts, including a late-1800s wooden voting box and several Harper’s Weekly engravings depicting African Americans voting.

The exhibit ends with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which was enacted to enforce the XVth Amendment, ratified nearly 100 years before.

HEART MONTH

A reminder to everyone that February is Heart Month. So let’s make blood pressure control our goal.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke, often showing no signs or symptoms. Which is why having your blood pressure checked regularly is important.

If you know you have high blood pressure, take these steps: Ask your doctor what your blood pressure should be. Take your blood pressure medicine as directed and reduce sodium intake, for sodium can raise blood pressure.

ALL-DISTRICT CONCERTS

Randi Shumate from Washington had the opportunity to attend the

Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association District XIV All-District Band concerts this past Saturday, Feb. 1, at Millbrook High School in Winchester.

Her granddaughter, Katie VanEck, from Robert E. Aylor Middle School, participated in the contest. She played the flute. Congratulations Katie!

According to Randi, students from thirty three schools auditioned to be in these bands.

Congratulations go out to another six from Rappahannock County who participated as well. They were Payton Cillo, flute; James Allred, baritone saxophone; Agustin Garcia, percussion; Sophia Hernandex, flute; Ninon Kirchman, trumpet; and Julian Cordero, percussion.

Bryant Lee will eat cake on Monday, Feb. 17. Birthday wishes as well go out to Bud Clatterbuck, who is celebrating on Wednesday, Feb. 19; another dear friend of mine, Lillie Corbin of Sperryville, who will be turning 92 on Sunday, Feb. 23. Mary McFarland of Sperryville will be turning 70 on Tuesday, Feb. 25, and Betty Grigsby, who will celebrate her special day on Friday, Feb. 28.

Hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather we had the first part of the week. I know I have.

My name is Tye and I’m a very cute 12-to14-week-old hound mix. I came to RAWL from a shelter farther south in Virginia and I have to say that RAWL is a step up. I love it here. It’s a great place to spend some time — but only some time. I am looking for a home. I’m a very sociable pup — “personality plus” as they say here — and am good with both dogs and cats. I can “sit” already and would be glad to learn some other commands. Love to meet you. I’ll be here but hurry!

Tye and his other four-legged friends in need of loving homes can be visited and adopted through the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League (RAWL), 160 Weaver Road, Amissville, open 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. excluding Wednesdays and Sundays, when it is closed. Call 540-937-3336 or visit www. rawldogs.org
