Washington Post Office may break ground within weeks

- By Luke Christopher

With this month’s blessing of the construction site by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, plans for the new post office in town can now proceed through the local approval process, Mayor Fred Catlin told the Washington Town Council at its regular monthly meeting Monday at town hall.

DEQ, which works closely with the Army Corps of Engineers on assessments of sites that fall into the wetlands

category (as does a small section of the proposed post office site at Warren Avenue and Leggett Lane), has now signed off on the site, Catlin said, adding:

“So the developher should be able to present the plans to the [county] building department within the next week and hopefully be able to break ground shortly thereafter.”

At last month’s council meeting, Catlin told the council that the developer had still not heard back on the Army Corps of Engineers’ wetlands impact assessment.

As far as construction proceeding, Catlin said: “I'm sure there will be some little things so I don’t want to give precise dates.”

Catlin added. “But it seems, at this point, we are talking about… weeks, instead of months, before ground is broken.”

Catlin invited anyone interested in being “part of the committee to oversee landscaping, and other flourishes, to the post office… to devise the signs that will be out on Warren Avenue and to also respectfully memorialize the [old] building and the history of the site, join us for that committee by contacting Barbara Babson, the town clerk, or myself.”
