Calling for a quid pro quo

-

We at the Rappahannock Democratic Committee support House Speaker Nancy Pelosi publicly tearing up her copy of Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday, February 4. In her words, the speech was a “pack of lies,” a made-for-TV performance.

The right side of the aisle cheered wildly at every distortion and falsehood the president made about the growth of the economy (it fell last year), unemployment ( jobs grew faster under Obama), protecting coverage of pre-existing conditions (as his administration works to destroy the ACA in court), supporting Medicare and Social Security (his new budget plan guts both programs)…on and on.

The speaker’s response was open, deliberate, and brave. No apology is necessary.

We suggest a quid pro quo. A Pelosi apology is warranted if, and only if, Trump apologizes for his insults, lies, threats of retaliation, acting like a spoiled brat; if he releases his tax returns; and specifically if he apologizes to Pelosi for refusing to shake her hand, to Adam Schiff, to the city of Baltimore, and to the state of Kansas.

One cannot do what Trump and his supporters do without the recipients of that malice taking umbrage.

The Rappahannock Democratic Committee therefore resolves that Speaker Pelosi’s action was entirely appropriate and warranted. It is a far cry from the shredding of the U.S. Constitution by Senate Republicans during the recent Trump impeachment trial.
