#5 Women Artists

-

It started with a seemingly simple question: Can you name five women artists?

Since 2016, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) has been asking this question on social media each March during Women’s History Month using the hashtag #5WomenArtists. The campaign calls attention to the fact that women have not been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses.

This month, Cottage Curator in Sperryville joins NMWA in celebrating local, regional and nationally recognized women artists by featuring #23WomenArtists on view at the Cottage and on social media.

It includes paintings and drawings by Kathy Chumley, Frances Coates, Nancy Galloway, Davette Leonard, Vicki Malone, Krista Townsend, K.C. Werner and Priscilla Long Whitlock as well as sculpture by Janet Brome, Joan Danziger and Alice McLean.

In addition, baskets by Christine Adcock and Billie

Ruth Sudduth and fiber art by Dabney Kirchman, Melissa Sarris and Sara Schneidman are on view. Other fine craft artists include ceramists Suzanne Crane, Shirley Gromen, Virginia Rood Pates and Cheryl Williams.

Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly, #23WomenArtists also highlights the work of woman woodturner, Harriett Maloney, and studio furniture artist, Christina Boy.

Artworks by these accomplished women will be in the galleries of Cottage Curator at 12018A Lee Highway, Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the month of March. Please join the celebration.
