“While living in quarantine can be di cult, the extra time at home has provided me with a much-needed opportunity to go outside and spend time in nature. I love taking pictures of the owers I nd while I’m walking. This heart-shaped ower was a happy reminder that there are still things worth smiling about!”

LAUREN PETTY , Rappahannock County High School senior from Amissville, who will attend UVA in the fall

“It’s assuredly felt as if our world has ground to a halt. One of the things that's captivated me is how nature and our pets seem to still go on, una ected by the outside world. We’ve welcomed brand new members into our family, and watching them grow every day has been undeniably motivating.”

“During this time of uncertainty, going outside and playing with my dog Dolly allows me to forget about the reality of what we’re facing today. The unknown can be terrifying and overwhelming. Racing in the yard and playing fetch with Dolly gives me hope that things will go back to normal soon.”

OLIVIA ATKINS , Rappahannock County High School senior from Sperryville, who will study nursing at Shenandoah University in Winchester

“I found this patch of orchids last Saturday while hunting turkeys at my farm on Red Oak Mountain. I had no luck with turkeys, but felt like I hit the jackpot!”

ANDREW MANWARING , Red Oak Mountain

Andrew shares more of a nice story...

My brother Nate is really clued in to local ora and fauna, and has really inspired me to see what plants I can discover this time of year before everything is overgrown. It really is such a great time for these little treasures.

“We made a push to take the family and my parents to the spot on Mother’s Day. We managed to get really close but the nal 100 yards was so steep my mother couldn’t make it, and since there were quite a few of them to “reseed the area” we made the decision to bring one down to her…”
