Healthcare matters

- By Thom Pellikaan

As we prepare for the June 23rd primary and then the general election, Virginia’s 5th District voters will need to be informed of the candidates aspiring to represent them as their U.S. congressman. Most people distrust politicians, but what if the voters didn’t have to consider a “politician,” and instead could vote for a candidate who wishes to serve all the public, both Democratic and Republican. Dr. Cameron Webb is the candidate to represent this District. He began this campaign because he believes that Virginians and people across this nation need relief from the skyrocketing cost of healthcare. Americans aren’t looking for another politician who makes promises with no real path to delivering. They are looking for someone to fight with them and for them, and someone with a deep understanding of why it is so important to get relief for people from the cost of care. More than that, they need someone with the experience to know what to do.

Dr. Webb is a physician and lawyer, and an assistant professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he is director of health policy and equity. Prior to coming to the University, he was a fellow at the White House during the Obama Administration and the beginning of President Trump’s, where his portfolio included education in workforce development, and criminal justice reform as part of President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative. He is a medical professional who is a passionate champion of health equity and is committed to advocating for the health needs of underserved communities, and he is currently a member of the board of directors of Doctors for America.

Many of Dr. Webb’s patients have insurance because of Medicaid. As a public health researcher, he has developed and executed several projects to examine the impact

Medicaid can have when done right. He serves as a member of Virginia’s Board of Medical Assistance, the Board that oversees the Medicaid program, and is passionate about the program and the people it protects. He will not be a candidate proposing to cut critical financial assistance to low-income individuals, families and children. To cut these benefits is to deem our fellow Americans as unworthy of basic medical care.

Dr. Cameron Webb is deserving of consideration to be our next U.S. congressman, so join us in supporting and voting for Dr. Webb on Tuesday, June 23. Come January 2020, he will do everything in his power, as Congressman, to ease the burden that the cost of healthcare is placing on the people of this district and the country.

Dr. Webb is a native of Spotsylvania, and his wife, Dr. Leigh Ann Webb, an emergency room doctor in Charlottesville, are the parents of two young children.

The writer is a former 36 year employee of the U.S. Senate, having served as Chief Press Liaison and Editor of the Senate Daily Digest. He lives in Woodville.
