Keeping the faith as summer

- Jan Clatterbuck jan@rappnews.com; 675-3338

Ihope that everyone had a grand Memorial Day weekend. Although the holiday itself was somewhat cloudy, it was a very nice day at my home in Harris Hollow. Some of us are now awaiting the next big holiday — July 4 will be here soon enough.

That said, it’s not known what the nation’s birthday celebration will consist of this year, what with the county’s reworks display canceled. Let’s keep the faith that we can at least celebrate with family and close friends.

CLASS OF 2020

Congratulations to all the graduates of the Class of 2020 at Rappahannock County High School. I know this is a big moment for the senior class to receive their diplomas. This day is always full of opposites: cheers and solemnity, memories and dreams, childhood and adulthood, goodbyes and hellos.

Although there have been many changes for the seniors this year, I hope your dreams will take you to the corners of your smile, to the highest of your hopes, to the windows of your opportunities, and to the most special places your heart has ever known.

Remember that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. I would like to leave this poem by Joanna Fuchs for the class of 2020. It’s titled, “The Time You Spent”:

Classes came,

Classes went;

It’s worth a lot, the time you spent. Congratulations are now due to the graduate, special you!

FACELIFT

The Old Washington School is getting a new coat of paint. In addition to repainting the front and side of the building, during the past 18 months a new roof was put on the combined apartment building and o ce space, with other general upgrades.

As for the old gym, there is completely new heating and air conditioning, with new paint and re nished wood oors.

The building now houses RappAtHome, Headwaters, the Town of Washington o ce, and Racer Construction.

It has also become something of a community center, hosting the Benevolent Fund annual dinner, memorial services, birthday parties, a high school prom and other such gatherings.

Drive by and check out the new color. It is bright and so cheerful.

AMAZING MILESTONE

Sarah Latham of Amissville smiles at her 99th birthday celebration on Thursday, May 21. Latham was editor of the Rappahannock News for 25 years beginning in the mid-1950s. She credits good health, country living, and a positive attitude for living so long.

May you have many more birthdays, Sarah!

REUNIONS CANCELED

The Dwyer family reunion to be held in July and the Bowen reunion to be held in August have been canceled due to concerns of COVID-19. There is some discussion about rescheduling for the fall.

Have a great week.
